Behind the disk is just black, and behind where the booklet goes just shows the chapter titles.

Regarding the DVD to Blu-ray upgrade dilemma, I'd be far more concerned about physical media eventually becoming extinct (in the next few decades) due to digital / streaming media. After all, digital media never goes bad unlike DVDs and BDs (though it might take several hundred years for the latter). Honestly, I can see physical media always being an option for hobbyists and niche collectors, in the distant future. Sorry for offending anyone with my opinion.

Just got a new haul of 6 Criterions: Seventh Seal, Persona, Cries and Whispers, Valerie and her Week of Wonders, Antichrist and Kwaidan. Good picks/releases?

I'm more worried about me become extinct in the next few decades but if I am around in say thirty years I'm fairly confident I'm not going to bemoaning the dire state of home theater.

The past thirty years have been pretty freaking amazing and there's no reason the next thirty aren't going to follow suit. If content is on a chip or a server or one of those Fortress of Solitude crystals instead of on a shiny little platter then so be it.

Enviable, especially the Bergmans.

I've wondered for years how they've survived since they price nearly everything at MSRP. You'd think they wouldn't wanna shut out more customers by eliminating Criterions' eligibility for the coupons. B&N should learn and adapt to the marketplace already. I even overheard a conversation in there last week between a cashier and a customer wherein the employee was talking about how Amazon is crushing the other retailers. You can't expect to stick around if your prices on everything are 40% higher than Amazon. Maybe I should stock up on Blu-ray only digipacks and older releases that are in great condition next sale just in case, cause selecting the best copies in-store may not be a privilege for much longer.

Everyone one of those films are masterpieces except for Kwaidan, in my opinion, though it is still very good.

The Seventh Seal is the absolute best film ever regarding the issue of doubt in a higher power, specifically the religious one.

Persona is probably the pinnacle of mind bending cinema.

Cries and Whispers is relatable to anyone who deals closely with thier family.

Valerie and Her Week Of Wonders is a trip. It's the strangest coming of age film I've ever seen.

Antichrist is one of my all time favorite horror films. It's very demanding and psychological. It's beautiful, dark, and disturbing.

I like Kwaidan too, it's just not one of my faves.

Yes, all very excellent pics.

Awesome too that each Bergman film you picked is from a different era of his career. He's one of my favorite directors

Awesome! Thanks for the great feedback, javy! I've seen Antichrist and The Seventh Seal before and consider both masterpieces. I have somehow not seen Persona or Cries and Whispers but am aware of their great reputations. Kwaidan, I've only seen the trimmed version over 10 years ago but really liked what I saw. Valerie and her Week of Wonders is something I can't wait to see and sounds right up my alley.

What knocks Kwaidan down from the high spot for me is that the second story didn't end the way I thought should have.

Taking the narrative elements away, I would still chalk it up as a masterpiece (from what I remember of it) based on the brilliant cinematography, lighting, and set decoration. It's a bit similar to how I feel about about Suspiria.
Plot-wise, Suspiria is terrible, along with the acting but the cinematography and lighting makes it a visual delight worth adding to one's collection. I think Kwaidan is miles better, on the whole, though.

All those releases are masterpieces in their own right, kakihara. Kwaidan is very good but it is recommended to watch each story separately because of the sheer length (run time) of the film. Plus you can have each story sink in as individual pieces in a longer narrative or some such nonsense.
