Ok, I really hope Criterion doesn't start getting into the habit of regularly rereleasing films on blu-ray to account for 4K restorations except if it was a truly botched affair to begin with like in the case of Madame de.... Diminishing returns much?

I really hope Criterion doesn't go down that road.

I don't think Criterion will re-release Belle du jour unless it's part of a larger Bunuel set. There's no precedent for BR re-releases unless they're part of a set (Not counting packaging changes like Breathless).

Such a shame. Big Clouzot fan and I would love to see Le Corbeau and the other title in the Criterion collection. I've held out on the region B releases hoping this might happen eventually. Really makes no business sense these titles just lay in limbo in Region A making nothing.

Hope Criterion does announce A Story from Chikamatsu. IMO you can never have too many Mizoguchi films in the collection.

That's what I thought.

Bigger Than Life lists SDH on the back cover, but Svet's review as well as several other sites, list standard English subtitles.

I've never seen one of Mizoguchi's films.

You should fix that. I see you have Late Spring and Toyko Story in your collection. Personally I find Mizoguchi films much more interesting then Ozu. Not to say I don't like Ozu, but Mizoguchi's attention to period detail borders on insanity and he refuses to use standard cinema conventions. Where Ozu basically sets the camera down low and is static Mizoguchi's takes are extremely economic with very few cuts, but a lot more dynamic using a lot more flourishes then Ozu, but very conservative in their use. Also while Ozu's films are filled with closeups Mizoguchi tends to limit close ups to a extent working with longer takes and cuts that blend well from scene to scene.

Ugetsu
Sansho The Baliff
The Life of Oharu
The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum

Are all great films worth checking out, but as a newcomer I think I'd recommend Ugetsu.

Well, if you read the review it says:

Quote:
Obviously, it was not introduced during the restoration process but during the encoding; however, it further collapses detail and destabilizes the image balance (see the right end of screencapture #25). All of these anomalies are very unfortunate because it is incredibly easy to tell that the 4K scan that was delivered was great, but the questionable color grading and then the poor encoding basically eliminated just about all of the major benefits from it.
So it sounds like it may be salvaged by having someone competent work on the 4K master. I'm sure Criterion is up for that challenge.

Trust me: It's something I've been meaning to correct for a while now. It's also something I've been failing to correct. Hopefully, I can at least see Ugetsu sometime soon.

The 4K remaster of Belle de Jeur is superior, and that includes the colors. Studio Canal just gave it a shoddy encode on Blu-ray that can look pretty gnarly at times. I've always recognized that the Criterion transfer looked like a dated source with off colors, they look dull as opposed to fresh and vivid. I would totally buy it again if Criterion issued the remaster on disc.

Fox already released it from the restoration, so I don't see any reason for Criterion to do a release.

Is the restoration of SUNRISE (which is on Blu-ray courtesy of 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment) a 2K or 4K restoration? The reason I ask is because I looked at the screencaps, and I couldn't tell if I was looking at pixels or something else. The screencaps are on the review for SUNRISE on Blu-ray.com.

It's from 2003, so if I had to guess, I'd say it was probably 2K.

Thanks for telling me.

But just to be sure, I know that a standard Blu-ray disc's resolution is 1080p, but exactly how can you tell if the source is a regular 1080p, 2K or 4K?
