I only have to compare the DVD which I've got in my cabinet right now. whether "right" or "wrong," the Blu-ray doesn't look like the DVD. that's pretty objective, actually. The Tooze even points it out in his blurb about the PQ.
DVDs authored in the late 90s and early 00s (and VHS before them) are notorious for dumbing down the color spectrum and contrast to accommodate the process of going from film to SD video.

In regards to the one shot that looks like it was night on the DVD and now day on the new Criterion BD/DVD, it's certainly possible it was incorrectly tinted at the time and the DP and Coppola are correcting the matter. Can anyone recall when that scene takes place in the film?

Well, sure, that stands to reason but if we can't recall what it looked like in the theater how can we determine whether A = B in the first place?

I owned the DVD probably about 6 months after seeing it theatrically. there may have been subtle differences between what I saw in the theater and, truth be told, I payed a lot less attention to things like that then, but this is a movie I knew well. the color palette helps define the mood and what one remembers about a film. the soft baby blue that was used on the DVD case is more in line w/ my recollections of the film. this just seems off - more so than other cases of blue and orange.

was just an observation, though. not complaining. I think this is Sophia Coppola's best film and I probably won't even buy it.

There is no doubt in my mind whatsoever that many films are having their color grading modified to go along with the current trend toward the orange/teal values. With experience in watching films both in cinemas and on television for well over five decades, my eyes have in the last few years been frequently seeing unusual shades of blue that were very rarely ever seen before. It can make it difficult for me to get into a film in the beginning (especially when the whites are even teal), and it's disappointing to see changes made to a film with which I'm familiar. Of course I know that memory is not perfect, but I'm also certain I'm not mistaken when I look at a screen and see colors that do not match my overall historical cinema experience.

Being There is only $17.89 from Amazon at the moment. Had to grab it at that price.

These discussions about teal and color grading drive me absolutely bonkers. I have a color deficiency which makes some of this stuff impossible for me to really perceive a lot of things people are talking about.

Deutans are people with deuteranomaly, a type of red-green color blindness in which the green cones do not detect enough green and are too sensitive to yellows, oranges, and reds.

As a result, greens, yellows, oranges, reds, and browns may appear similar, especially in low light. It can also be difficult to tell the difference between blues and purples, or pinks and grays.
What I'm seeing is different from what others are seeing. It can get very frustrating.

It's easy for me- I'm old. I can't remember what films looked like a week ago.

Or we could switch to a strictly B&W diet but those are probably argued over as much as the color ones.

You would weed out a lot of people.

It's amazing how many people will not watch a film that is in Black and White.

I had a co-worker who once asked me which one of three rentals he had available he should watch. One of them was the original The Haunting which I recommended. He said he had problems watching b&w movies but I sold it with the "it'll scare you" guarantee. I was eager to hear his thoughts after the weekend and he liked it but he couldn't concentrate because he said that he kept trying to imagine it in color.

I have loved black and white since I was a kid; probably because I used to watch BBC reruns of Flash Gordon serials.

My personal preference is for B&W or for technicolor, but having installed a surround sound system 2 months ago, I am frequently conflicted between watching an older film and one that makes full use of the rears.

Ha, there’s a lot of honesty in that for me too, but I have exceptions from time to time. My criteria for BD (or 4K when I get there) is how it looks to me right now. I try not to let anything else get in the way of that.

I wouldn't trust a DVD that came out in 2000, no way. And like you said, I doubt many were A/B-ing discs for A/V back then. I never said the Blu-ray looked like the DVD, although some caps do, because I think it's more accurate than the DVD.

I'm sure there's been some teal revisionism, but not to the extent this site would have people believe. It's ridiculous to me that so many filmmakers would want to teal-ify their movie to appeal to some modern sensibility that I have to question is even there outside of current movie posters and the Transformers movies (not even that many use that teal/orange color scheme out of the hundreds of movies that release each year, especially right now). Respectfully, television broadcasts are not a resource for determining color accuracy (though the current HD era is certainly better than the previous decades for television, which might as well have been VHS quality). As well, even theatrical prints from decades past wouldn't be 100% accurate.

With Virgin Suicides specifically, it's only portions of the film anyway, not like there's an tint over the entire movie. There actually appears to be more yellow than teal.

This was great. Nice to see Hawke shouting out Matt Dillon's amazing performance in Rumble Fish.

Rumble Fish will be mine in July. I thought The Outsiders was brilliant, and can't wait to see FFC's follow up.

What I wouldn't give to spend twenty minutes in the Criterion Closet. It's my personal Valhalla.

I love how he mentions Kubrick and P.T. Anderson in the same sentence. Now that was brilliant.

For anyone interested in watching The Scarlet Empress before its speculated Criterion release this year, TCM is showing it this Sunday morning.

Too excited for the eventual Toho kaiju set. Purposefully holding back going through the Godzilla films waiting for it. I hope the wait isn’t too long.
