Hawke gushing about Paris, Texas and holding PTA in such high company. A man after my own heart.

The last couple months I've been listening to jazz (late 50's to mid 60's) nonstop and inevitably I've ran across Herbie Hancock's score to Blow Up, Miles' for Elevator to the Gallows and many more.

Any Jazz aficionados here that have favorite scores in the Collection? I'd like to sort a (re)watchlist based around them.

Miles Davis scored Elevator to the Gallows, as you pointed out. And his Jack Johnson score is one of his absolute best albums.

I love jazz but I'm no afficianodo. I will say though that when I was a kid in the 90's I was real big into Zeppelin (still am) and Vh-1 had a show called Legends and they were one of their features. I had watched that episode numerous times. Anyway, that episode featured clips from Blow Up when discussing Jimmy Page's begginings with The Yardbirds. I always thought those clips were just live performances, so I was pleasantly surprised when I seen this in Antonioni's film. Thank you for that knowledge Criterion!

Sweet Smell of Success has some good jazz music in it.

Good news. Somebody has already done the work for you.

https://www.criterion.com/lists/2175...got-that-swing

A seriously interesting list.

edit: I notice that the list omits Il Sorpasso, which features a wonderfully jazzy score by Riz Ortolani.

The young boy in the very under-appreciated Murmur of the Heart is a jazz fan. It's been a while since I've seen the film, but I recall him playing records, so the music is part of the soundtrack.

By the Chico Hamilton Quintet! Their first, self-titled album is one of my favorites. I've been hunting for an LP of the Sweet Smell... soundtrack for a while, but still haven't come across one in good condition.

Finally broke down and purchased these Region B titles. Not to be a complainer, but a lot of hatred for Studiocanal/Lionsgate shutting down any hope of getting a ton of classic titles in region A. I guess region free is the only way to go.

La Prisonniere
Le Corbeau
Quai Des Orfevres

On another note I'd love to see some of these and the Nikkatsu eclipse set get Bluray releases. Big fan of a lot of those movies especially the ones with Nakadai

Honestly, going Region-Free is the best thing I ever did. Granted, it's not like I've bought a million non-Region A titles. But I've been really happy being able to buy the ones which I have. And just having the freedom and the lack of worrying about where this or that title is available -- it's really a relief.

And there are some available for a reasonable price.

I recently finally bought a region free player too. Pickup on South Street, The Naked City, and Shoot the Piano Player are among the few that I've already purchased.

Holy Moly!!!!! Ornette Coleman!!! My taste leans heavily toward free jazz (and he's the king) so I'll have fun revisiting Naked Lunch soon. The dude was a damn genius.

Thanks for all the great responses, people. Double thanks for the links to those two lists, TajSamKojiJesam and belcherman. I feel some edumacation coming on.

Javy, yeah. That struck me when first seeing Blow-up ages ago. I think I had just read the Clapton biography that year too. It's crazy how many all time great guitar players were in that band.

(Hopefully that doesn't open an even larger can of worms: Rock music in the Collection)

Finished watching Barry Lyndon for the first time. Did anyone else feel it was too short? I absolutely loved it. Beautiful cinematography and acting.

I think it would work really well as a mini-series.

Some films you just hate the fact that they end. My example would be Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. I hated seeing the credits roll on that one. I was ready for another 2-3 hours.

It certainly works as it is but I’m not sure where I’d draw the line for Kubrick. Most of his films could go on for days for me.

The Third Man airing in 10 minutes on TCM

I am updating this list right now, but wanted to alert anybody that has not seen The Third Man yet. Watch it, or record it!
