I'm kind of disheartened that some of the posts are knocking Criterion for (possibly) not putting out more new to the Collection titles in January. The November releases aren't even here yet, and already there is disappointment that, if what has been posted before is true, only
[Show spoiler]Cronos and Broadcast News
would be brand new through January. I'm sure November 2010 probably represents the biggest expenditure of time and money from Criterion since they began producing Blu-rays, not just with the seven-film BBS box, but also the massive Night of the Hunter set, much of which was likely produced new and especially for that release (like the 2 1/2 hour documentary) considering what MGM had previously made available.

Moreover, if the
[Show spoiler]Fuller titles are re-released
, I doubt they'd be as bare-bones as the DVDs were (they had only trailers), so that's more new content right there.

There's like 17 of those Merchant Ivory films.

I didn't see Howards End in that list...was it removed once the BD came out?

Kind of... after the blu-ray release, Criterion then decided to release a new "Howards End" DVD as part of the numbered collection to appease the DVD fans.

My goal is to get every Criterion on BD that was ever released on DVD...so bring on the old DVDs spines 1-5 hundred something...or other. I love those little "C"s in the upper left corner.

But seriously, I am a huge fan and supporter of Blu ray technology, and if older movies can look and sound this good, then I'm all for Criterion releasing ANYTHING that will help anyone broaden their horizons when it comes to cinema.

Makes sense...if I had the other version, I would have written in a number on the spine in pen, and then drawn a little C in the upper left corner...for consistency.

It just doesn't seem like the film was rated on its own merits, and rather in comparison to other films. This is unfortunate because there really is no close point of reference or clear cinematic ancestry for House. It is what it is, and it succeeds in its aims. I think the only "mood" you need to be in to enjoy it is the mood to have a good time! Very disappointed.

I'd compare it to something like Jigoku... An acquired taste for sure.
Jigoku is the obvious closest thing in recent memory to emerge from that period, but even it is nowhere near the manic brilliance of House. I do disagree with it being an acquired taste, though. If you don't like it the first time, I really don't think that this is one that will grow on you.

We need more Japanese films released on Criterion blu-ray. As much as I enjoy Kurosawa and Oshima, there are countless Japanese films which deserve the blu treatment including Mizoguchi, Kobayashi, Ozu, Imamura, Teshigahara, Naruse, Suzuki, Ichikawa etc.

as for non-rereleases I just want some more Brian De Palma in the collection, namely Blow Out and Body Double
I want Nights of Cabiria so very much.

Those should be getting DVD re-issues, too, not just a BD upgrade.

Well, I actually been up for about 20 mins, but I did all my morning stuff and read all your posts to catch up. I don't need to reply to 6 straight posts like I did yesterday morning, so I'm ready to go. Bring em on!

I guess they can be announced at any moment... wasn't it closer to 2 or 3 EST last announcement? Although I think one time they were posted late morning.

I would love to see some Mellville!

For anybody else who wants it spoiled:

Broadcast News, Shock Corridor, Naked Kiss, Robinson Crusoe on Mars.
The Fullers were okay as I recall (particularly Naked Kiss), but I'd really like to see them re-do the non-anamorphic early Suzuki's (even if they ended up being DVD only releases!). Those 2.35:1 films just don't show very well when squeezed so tiny so you can still read the subtitles. Same goes for Andre Rublev. I suppose their popularity, or lack thereof, has something to do with it not having happened (hopefully ->) yet. Maybe some day.
