That Cannes line-up is pretty great. Cannot think of another film this year that I'm anticipating more than Lee Chang-dong's Burning.

Ha, there are some movies that seem to require a certain level of grit or filth in order to retain their authenticity.

I'm looking forward to that film, too, as well as the following.

Ash Is Pure White (Jia Zhangke)
BlackkKlansman (Spike Lee)
Cold War (Paweł Pawlikowski)
Shoplifters (Hirokazu Koreeda)
Under the Silver Lake (David Robert Mitchell)

Ditto. Cannot wait for the Pawlikowski. I'd also add Hamaguchi on the list.

Have you seen Happy Hour? If so, how is it?

It's the only film of his I've seen. It's fantastic. Even with its length, it was way more novelistic than I was expecting, with a structure that feels more intimate than epic. It may be daunting, but the film cares for its characters in a nearly overwhelming sincere manner that I honestly didn't want it to end (and I sat through it in one sitting.)

Hopeful for a box set—either that, or kaiju. Can maybe try and swing a birthday gift.

Yeah, July is often a box set month. I was thinking about guessing the Godzilla set, but I'm wondering if they'll save that for later in the year (nov/dec). Doesn't really matter though, it shall be mine! Another big set they may do is for Fassbinder's Eight Hours Don't Make a Day. Then of course, there's the Ingmar Bergman Centennial set yet to come too

I'm just hoping for something from the Warner catalog. That's a deep well.

It is a little odd that they haven't released anything from them in quite some time. Prior to that lapse, they seemed to have at least just about every month.

A Kaiju box set would be most welcome along with an upgrade or two like Walker.

Was that definitely still from Warner? I swore I heard something about Waters having the rights to his movies, and Criterion dealing with him directly or something. If it's from Warner, then my mistake.

Mishima is Warner...

Would love to have Chungking Express and/or a Wong Kar Wai set. Shame the announcements aren't today instead of Monday!

Mishima is an upgrade, and I believe it was originally licensed from Image Entertainment:

There have definitely been some Warner releases, just not enough to keep up with my ravenous appetite for them. When I think about the top of my wish list - The Thin Man, After Hours, Straight Time, A Face in the Crowd, Hud, Klute, Gunga Din, Barfly, Kubrick films...on and on it comes up Warner. Hopefully WAC will take care of many of these, but I'm always going to hope for Criterion first.
