Whatever the situation may be, Bull Durham is in the collection and no amount of complaining is going to change that.
Bull Durham was a well received film that has aged well and remains beloved by many. There is room for it in the Criterion collection.

This Bull Durham hate confuses me.... people are acting like they just put Angels in the Outfield into the collection.

I don't get it either. The film has been considered a contemporary classic and holds a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. Film snobs I guess.

That's great news. I own the UK release and its perhaps the sh*ttiest blu-ray in my entire collection. I would love to be rid of that thing.

If any sports film deserves a Criterion release it should be something like Bull Durham. I’d like to see Moneyball join the collection at some point. The only sports movies worth a damn to me are Baseball ones. They just work for some reason. There are occasional gems from other sports like Friday Night Lights but for the most part it’s just Baseball to me.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Hoosiers join one day, with it being from MGM and all.

I agree with Moneyball and quite frankly I think Field of Dreams belongs in the Criterion Collection.

Another sports movie I could see entering the collection would be The Wrestler.

I think sometimes Criterion gets a list of 25 and has to pick 10, that sort of thing, but I don't think they ever get really forced to release titles they consider "less desirable".

I think Raging Bull has a great chance of being included in the Criterion Collection. It was back in the Laserdisc days.

I think Field of Freams is absolutely coming to Criterion.

And I forgot Boxing movies are pretty great too. So it’s Baseball and Boxing that work best in cinema.

Just bought that last night so if it follows the same pattern as Bull Durham did for me, you'll be seeing a Field of Dreams CC announcement in about six months or so.

Next year is Field of Dreams 30th Anniversary. Hopefully a new 4k restoration is in the works.

Going to blind buy A Matter of Life and Death.

I'll probably re-purchase Black Narcissus and The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp around the same time, too.

I decided to watch the criterion’s I have put off watching.

First off was Kagemusha. I really don’t know what to say about it. It kind of left me speechless. It was so well done. The camera framing was spot on. The story was well thought out and I keep going over certain scenes in my head. The dream sequence is amazing. It literally made me think of the characters walking inside a painting Kurosawa made. Also, the ending
[Show spoiler]where I felt that he was trying to convey that the kingdom was doomed after one of the four elements died
was a great allegory. Will definitely watch over again.

2)Those actors, while good, haven't really been in truly important American films. Their best films are rather middling oscar films that are quickly forgotten years after their release. A case can be made for Thelma and Louise, and The Shawshank Redemption is popular, but I think you would struggle to argue that they were in great films when looked at from a historical perspective. i.e taking the whole of cinema into account.

Bull Durham is not Rocky, and I like Costner.
Now that MGM is pretty much licensing everything they have, I can't wait for your reaction when Criterion announces Dances With Wolves (complete with both cuts).

Also, Bob Roberts would certainly be a worthy addition to the Criterion label. I just recently watched it, and it's scarily prescient to how things are today.

Still think that he is a fine actor, one of those dependable everyman actors who can steal any scene, I Come With the Rain was great and showed just what he can do.
I could see him in Superman Returns, but that film would have torpedoed his career like it did Brandon Routh's, so nothing much would have changed there.

I could kinda see him as Batman/Bruce Wayne, but I don't know. I thought Christian Bale was wildly overrated in that role, so I'm not opposed to a change.

Spider-Man seems all wrong for him.

Now I'm wondering how he would have fared in The Prestige. That doesn't really seem like a great fit either. But I can oddly see him in the role of a magician. Bale actually did a nice job there though.

Absolutely. I'd be all for this. Unfortunately, we'd have to get the director's more pretentious arthouse fare first - like The Fountain* - before some of Criterion's insufferable snob fans would "settle" for an actual masterpiece like The Wrestler.

*I liked The Fountain, but anyone who doesn't realize it was a complete and utter mess is deluding themselves.

You guys are right about baseball movies. There's something kind of mythic and ethereal about baseball that lends itself well to movies. Field of Dreams, Moneyball, The Natural, Bull Durham, Eight Men Out.

Yeah I'm really baffled by it too. As far as I knew I always thought it was a beloved film by many.
