Well, here's an interesting point. L’enfance nue was released on August 17th. That was the last DVD exclusive title announced.
Spine numbers 535 (Mr. Lawrence) through 552 (Broadcast News) are all on Blu. 18 consecutive titles is pretty nice. |

On a Criterion note, I have to admit that I am really looking forward to the Basil Dearden Eclipse set. I haven't seen any of his films, but I love classic British cinema. |

This may be an ignorant question (and googling won't help me since I don't really know what to make of box-office and home video sales) but I have Broadcast News on DVD, and I find most of my friends haven't seen it, and many haven't even heard of it....... does it have a fairly strong following with the average movie-goer?

I just bought Army of Shadows in the most recent B&N sale thinking it may be too closely connected to the StudioCanal licensing issues, but I will be gladly buying the Blu-ray!
I'm in for Broadcast News as well. I like the Fuller films, but not enough to own. Robinson Crusoe on Mars was interesting, but not my sentiment. Haven't seen the Eclipse set films. |

And to counter-attack your "ridiculous" comment... those covers by Daniel Clowes are wonderful!!! He created the "Ghost World" comic, and his style is most welcomed for those covers. CC |

The only thing I get out of the Robinson Crusoe on Mars blu release is:
No one should ever say crap about releasing a movie to blu that didn't sell well on Criterion dvd. If they put this out, they should be able to release 90% of their stuff to blu without no "it didn't sell well". And the Army of Shadows (Studio Canal) release let's me know: They SHOULD be able to release Elevator to the Gallows! Now Criterion! Do it now! Last edited by SpiderBaby; 10-15-2010 at 07:37 PM. |

No, they sit on my shelf, shrink-wrapped, and after I open each one, I bring it back to Best Buy where I use their shrink wrap machine to seal it back up.
No scratches ![]() Actually, I guess I've just been either real lucky or real careful. I don't have that problem with any of my Blus. As a matter of fact, it is the cardboard slipcases that are more noticably damaged than anything else. |

But... I mean, how many people have heard of Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence or House or Walkabout? Sure some titles and director's have little cult followings, but I think even the Godard lovers and Wes Andersonites are just a small part of the overall "smart film viewer" demographic who generally trusts Criterion. If you're asking if non-Criterion folks will pick up Broadcast News like they picked up Chasing Amy or Benji Button, I'd say no. I'll pick it up because it's a pretty good film I haven't seen in a while and Criterion reminded me of that. |

I totally spaced it being announcement day so I'm late to the party today.
anyway, SO excited about "Army of Shadows". I had the HD DVD, but never tried to watch it since it had no English subs. and hooray for some Fuller noir, though the dvd case artwork is far superior imo compared with the almost laughable "new" artwork. I might just have to make some custom covers for those bds. gotta say I was certainly anticipating some more Chaplin. I mean I really hope they don't spread all those films over a whole year. I guess I just need to order the UK discs; I'm ready to see some Chaplin on blu. also a little surprised at no "Picnic and Hanging Rock" by now. but most of all I just cannot believe Criterion hasn't given one inkling of a blu-ray of "Brazil". I would have thought that would have been one of the first 10 titles. man, I wish they would release that on blu; or hint at it coming; or something. just got a shipping notice for "Seven Samurai" life is good. ![]() |
