I've tweeted Criterion about Pride of the Yankees many times. I'm hopeful. If a DVD could be worn out, mine would be.

The Warner Brothers 4 Film Favorites set of Pride of the Yankees, Cobb, Bang the Drum Slowly and Fear Strikes Out is one of the best things I've ever bought. $8 new.

I do love Cobb for Tommy Lee Jones' performance of the Georgia Peach, but the Al Stump book the film is based off of is revisionist cr__. Ty Cobb was no angel, but from all accounts, he wasn't portrayed accurately at all.

Agreed. I don't know what the heck Olive did; the picture quality isn't bad, but the aspect ratio is badly screwed up. From memory of watching it the last time, it seemed stretched out. I've still got the DVD, and just watch that now.

I'm tempted to get this. I already have Pride of the Yankees but don't have the other three

In my opinion, it's Gary Oldman's best performance of his career, although I haven't seen his new Churchill movie. Unbelievable performance. If you're region free and you like Gary Oldman even a little bit, you're really missing out if you don't get it.
I'm on the Region B side of the pond but am also region free. Have read the review of the Twilight Time Blu but still think a better edition could be produced.

If you enjoyed The Firm I recommend you also try I.D. (not sure if it is available in the US). Two police officers go undercover as football hooligans.

Joe Jackson is one of the best players in the history of the game. I agree with you. None other than Babe Ruth patterned his swing after Shoeless Joe. But Jackson knowingly participated in the plot to throw the 1919 series, and accepted $5,000 of the promised $20,000. For that, he correctly was banned from the game for life.

There's a legal concept that is applicable here. Ignorantia legis neminem excusat, or "ignorance of the law excuses no one." It's true that Jackson was illiterate. But, in that era, betting, and throwing games, was rampant. It was impossible for a Major League player to not know that was against the rules. Jackson first appeared in a game with the Athletics in 1908, and he became a full time player in 1911. He'd appeared in nearly 1,200 Major League games before the 1919 Series. His performance on the field those eight games really doesn't matter. He was the best player on the team. His vow to help throw the Series enabled the plotters. Without him, and their ace pitcher, Eddie Cicotte participating in the conspiracy, it never could have happened.

And what about his performance in the Series? Rob Neyer wrote an excellent article about Jackson's culpability on ESPN's site back in 2001. The plan was for the Sox to throw certain games, and then win others, so other betters, and Major League Baseball, would not become aware of the plan.

Neyer reviewed Jackson's play:

Quote:
"But the evidence suggests that Jackson did not try his best. The White Sox and Reds played eight games in the 1919 World Series. The evidence suggests that the conspirators tried to win three games, and they tried to lose five. Jackson hit .545 in the three games he wanted to win.

In the first four games the conspirators wanted to lose, Jackson hit .250 with zero RBI. In the fifth fixed game, Jackson was hitless until the Reds were ahead 5-0, at which point he hit a solo home run. Later, with the Sox trailing the Reds 10-1, Jackson hit a meaningless two-run double.

In the field, Jackson's play was questionable, too. Triples are rarely hit to left field ... yet in the 1919 World Series, three of Cincinnati's nine triples were hit to left field, where Jackson was stationed. And there were other things, too. White Sox pitcher Dickie Kerr, who won twice in the Series, later commented, "Our outfielders fielded base hits slow, allowing the Reds to take extra bases. And, there were times when the fielders played the Reds just opposite of what they were supposed to do. In that way they left gaps for the ball to fall safely."
If any of the eight deserve reinstatement, it's Buck Weaver. All he was guilty of was not telling Charles Comiskey and MLB of the plot. He did not participate, took no money, and he was banned, anyway.

Jackson received a lifetime ban. Well, it was served. While I am conflicted on the matter, I do feel that Jackson deserves to be reinstated, and his candidacy for Cooperstown should immediately be considered by the Veterans Committee. I abhor cheating in baseball in any form. But I am also one to forgive. While I detest what these men did, it feels wrong that the game's all-time hit king, and home run king, are not in the Hall of Fame. And Jackson is one of the top ten hitters in the game's history. His play deserves recognition.

Though Joe Jackson should not be banned from the HoF. That's ridiculous, and doesn't even match up with what happened.

I'm sorry. If THAT is throwing a Series, then I want 25 guys on my team, EVERY YEAR, who are determined to throw the Series. Joe was not a bright or educated guy by all accounts. Someone offering him money probably didn't even compute for him. He came from abject poverty.

I'm sorry. I know we weren't really talking about this, but it's a SERIOUS personal gripe of mine. Baseball is my favorite sport, and Joe was one of the greatest players who ever put on a glove.

In one year it will be 100 freakin' years! And he didn't even do anything! Come the freak, on!

OK, OK, I'll stop now. I need a drink. I'm so pissed off right now that ... OK. Go on.

Three very good movies, but watching Tony Perkins swing a baseball bat in Fear Strikes Out is cringe-inducing.

But outside of the Cronenberg factor, I'm quite frankly surprised Criterion released it - the acting from the main character is beyond wooden.
that was intentional, look at the two main characters, they are their opposite.

This program, the first of two parts, presents recent restorations from the Fox Film collection by MoMA and the UCLA Film and Television Archive, including exceedingly rare films by Ford, King, and Walsh; a pair of unseen early Spencer Tracy gangster films; and a new digital transfer of Frank Borzage’s 1927 masterpiece 7th Heaven.
7th Heaven would be a dream come true winning 3 Oscars in 1929.

My opinion: I'm not a big fan of them. In all the years that I've been watching or collecting movie paper they're ones that I've never warmed up to. They're too abstract for my taste but that's exactly what a lot of folks like about them. I respect that but I like an image that connects me to a film right away.

I pre-ordered Moonrise and Midnight Cowboy from Amazon just now.

Amazon comes through in a pinch for the titles that I want to get before the sales. These are both $27 and change now, with a possibility that the price may go even lower before the release date.

It seems like the recent pattern for prices is initial listing at $39.99. Release date price of $27.99 with a gradual decrease thereafter. Some titles that have been out for several months are around $22.

I've been keeping an eye on The Hero and it just decreased from its release date price of $27.99.

I'm still spoiled by my $18 purchase of Night of the Living Dead.

I also let my Barnes & Noble membership lapse this past year because I found that it was more trouble than it was worth, with B&N not listing new Criterion titles on their websites and with the brick-and-mortar B&N stores listing availability for certain Criterion Blu-rays, but actually only having the DVDs in the store.

I'll do well to purchase big titles (the Dietrich set, etc.) from Barnes & Noble during the big sales, but I find that I'm saving just as much money and effort by purchasing everything else from Amazon Prime.

All my Criterion buys lately (honestly, pretty much all my media buys) have come from Bull Moose -- they've been under $26 with no tax and free shipping. Definitely gonna go for the Dietrich set during the B&N sale, though.

I'm not renewing my BN membership when it expires for the same reason and the fact they only send me coupons months away from July/November. The best deal for me is 5% back on Amazon purchases. Even if another store has a better deal I can buy a gift card for that store to get the 5% back.

While I barely set foot in Barnes & Noble outside of the Criterion sales, I will say that I've had the exact opposite experience when they do roll around. I go in the initial day of the sale and aside from maybe one or two discs (one being the 2nd World Cinema release which the store did have, but was ruined by spider wrap wiring) in the past four years or so, they've had everything on my list in stock, and as a completist, that amounts to about 25 or so blu-rays and an eclipse set or two each time. With that amount, having the membership just makes sense. I do have Prime as well, but aside from the rare Walmart price match, I don't bother with Amazon for Criterions and just wait out the B&N sales.
