I watched The Silence of the Lambs this morning and it was the first time I'd seen it. I remember hearing about it when it came out when I was little, I'd seen the advertisement in one of those movie catalogues you could get in the video stores back in those days, but I just never watched it over these years.

At first I didn't think I was going to be able to take Jodie Foster's Dolly Parton impression. But either the movie was real good, the accent lessened, or I just got used to it. One thing is for sure, the movie is real damn good, as I'm sure almost everyone else here already knows.

You know, Hannibal Lector, he's not really that bad of a guy, he's just a little misunderstood. Just answer the guys f***ing questions and try to get on his good side and maybe

Oh I dunno, he is a predator who devoured a census taker, and a whole bunch of other people before his eventual incarceration. In the Hannibal novel, he goes so far as to
[Show spoiler]try and brainwash Clarice. Even though it didn't work, the two still wound up together
. It kinda puts a creepier spin on the events and relationships of SOTL. Can't help but to watch the film now and see it as Hannibal becoming a kind of personified evil that reflects on the other characters in the story--it not only exposes the pathology of Buffalo Bill (or the Tooth Fairy in Red Dragon), it also threatens to creep into Clarice.

In the end, it's not about getting on his good side--I don't even think that's possible. It's about him getting you on the end of his fork. Imo anyway.

I scene I liked a lot was when Clarice told him to look into his own self with all of his expertise and do some soul searching. Those weren't the words she used but it was definitely the idea. He didn't care for that too much.

But yeah, I was just funnin' a bit about him not being that bad of a guy, I wouldn't trust him with a struck match.

I need to watch the other films.

It's the novel's ending specifically. The movie wussed out and changed it.

I think that Clarice deliberately tones it down after Lecter makes fun of her accent, but it then creeps back in when she is at her most nervous.

You may very well be correct. Toward then end I noticed it and thought I had just gotten used to it.

Great observation.

Oh I love Hannibal the novel. It is almost Wilkie Collins like in its melodrama towards the end. The film didn't go as far in terms of narrative but had a laughing at its own excess sense of humor that worked well. And you gotta give Liotta credit for nicely carrying off such a preposterous scene.

Is it wrong that I wish Hannibal Lecter was real, just so I could send him to a Nickleback concert?

That scene at the end with Liotta is great, may be worth watching the film just for that. I remember seeing Hannibal in the theater & almost everyone booed at the end.

I'm one of those weirdos that prefers Red Dragon to Manhunter, mainly because I'm a huge fan of Norton and Fiennes.

Nothing weird about loving Red Dragon. It's a great film. I love it even more than Silence of the Lambs let alone Manhunter (which hasn't held up well for me except for William Petersen's great performance). Hannibal is awful IMO. Red Dragon doesn't get enough credit.

Just noticed the addition of Bull Durham. I like the film but it's far from my favorite film of the 80s-90s with a baseball tag. A much more interesting title would have been The Sandlot. It's both a baseball movie and a fantastic coming of age story that many kids of my generation grew up with. Been hoping for a comprehensive special edition with the original cast together for a commentary track, interviews, and a documentary.

I'd love that too. It's one of the best baseball movies ever. I'd buy it in a second.

Unfortunately, I wonder if The Sandlot has fallen into the same category as Terminator 2 and others - multiple budget releases and re-releases, making it a tough sell at the Criterion price-point.

It'll never happen though, so I guess it doesn't matter.

You've seen the buffoonish snobbery surrounding Bull Durham in this thread. Imagine the reaction for Sandlot...

Haven't ordered Silence of the Lambs yet...but I damn sure snapped up Foster's Freaky Friday when that released a couple weeks back. Not bad for a prequel.
