Cinema is like a battle ground...

I'm in for Melville and Fuller. The artwork on the Fuller's is dynamite.

At the time, it was a hit... 7 Oscar nominations, including Picture, director, acting... but like all James L Brooks films, a lightweight dramedy that I don't think stands the test of time. But hey, its an odd choice for Criterion, and they are good at throwing us curveballs now and then. Is it worthy of their library? IMO, no. Is it a well-remembered film? Not really.

Where's Sweet Smell of Success?????

Personally, I think it's his one film that holds up just fine.

From what I've read that seems very possible. But that pink and yellow colour scheme is just... argh, I can't even describe it. At first I thought the woman on the forehead was a lobster.

Oh I think it hold up perfectly well... but is it really remembered? Not so much. Terms of Endearment is a weaker film, but more people know it, I'd say.

"Argh! It's just so hard to just say something's nice. I always have to complain about it. Argh!"

Same here. Many of his films (As Good As It Gets for example) are very good at catching people's attention because they're mainstream, but better than the bulk of what's out there. Like an unexpectedly good Big Mac. Surprisingly satisfying, but not worth remembering.

But I think Broadcast News is a little more relevant and a better example of film as a medium from that period.

I enjoy that sometimes Criterion goes back to it's Laserdisc days, presenting a film that may not be high-high art, but gives a sampling of all walks of cinema.

I guess I just need to order the UK discs; I'm ready to see some Chaplin on blu.
Arkadin,
Better start ordering those UK discs 'cause Criterion has already mentioned that the Chaplin films would be coming over the "next couple of years."

Next couple of years for several Chaplin films; I can deal with. Next couple years just to get City Lights would make me cry.

And please God include a proper version of the original non-SE version of The Gold Rush. (Yes, I'm familiar with all the issues surrounding this, but I can still hope).

Maybe, if you're really, really nice to the Chaplin Estate and convince them to license out the materials to Criterion then we might get it. Otherwise, I think you're out of luck.

Okay fellas, I'm kind of OCDing now over my plastic cases. Never have I been like this until this forum. It was first a joke, now when I look at them it seems that some gets scratches on the front covers (M mostly) from rubbing up against others when I slide them out.

Now I know you OCD people know how to help me. Is there any protective sleeve or other way to keep them for marking up?

I've got a very cheap option for ya CG...just don't pack them so tightly together. I can't say that I've ever seen a scratch on any of my cases.

Now the OCD thing about my method is, that every time I get a new BD, I have to shift things around and make room on the 2-3 shelves that I have them on right now. The case is at the optimum "tightness", when I can pick up a case at an angle and it if falls straight by its own weight, then it's tight enough/loose enough.

I s*it you not...sounds pretty OCD to me.

[OCD]Yes, it comes free with the purchase. When you get a new disc cut open the bottom of the cellophane/shrink wrapping and carefully slide it off, then you can use that.

I've done this with my entire Blu-ray collection because I noticed on my DVDs the soft plastic sleeves tended to get this slightly tacky feel after a while, now they all have the fresh, glossy, like-new feel.

It's a bit of a problem with Criterions though because the wrapping tends to stick to the case so it can be a challenge getting it loose without ripping it.[/OCD]

lol, thanks guys. I guess the only way to fix my problem of the ones already is to buy replacement cases from Criterion ($$$$) and replace them with those.

The artwork and everything is 100% fine. It's just sometimes when the light hits the plastic in a way, you can see all these scratches on the front covers. Just a few of them (M, Dillinger is Dead, 400 Blows-but I still have my cardboard case too, and a couple of my older ones). My M cover was already like this months ago before it came. All of my Godard films are perfect, though, of course.

Winning Best Picture, Director, Actress, Supporting Actor and Adapted Screenplay will do that to a film. Of course, the superior (IMO) Broadcast News went 0-7 at the Oscars, mainly due to a rather great film by the name of The Last Emperor being in its way.

Right. But the original question was "I find most of my friends haven't seen it, and many haven't even heard of it....... does it have a fairly strong following with the average movie-goer?"... And I say not really. For whatever reason.
