It'd work as a mobile viewing option. Now it looks like nearly everything else and not for the better. "It ain't broke, but you gotta fix it anyway"

As a web designer for the past 22 years, I have to say that Criterion really did a good job simplifying the new site.

I long for the days of blinking text, big floating pictures, and loud colors. Oh, and designing to make Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator display the same way.

Ok, not really.

And therein lies the rub: is this process for pros to show their skills to each other or to enhance average consumers' experience.

Happens in many fields.

Always a fine line, these changes and who they benefit.

My guess, as someone mentioned earlier, CC probably just fell for the current trend in web design.

The phantom page days are over.

On the plus side, I will be updating every single Blu-ray cover over the next few weeks (and hopefully, at the same time, finally getting around to my database project).

The site's collection page has some bugs that need to be worked out.

I just ordered my first few Criterions!

I went with: The Breakfast Club, The Virgin Suicides, The Royal Tenenbaumns, Scanners, Ace in a Hole, Time Bandits, Blow Out, Shallow Grave, Night of the Living Dead and some others I don't remember, haha. I am excited to check them out!

Trends are powerful. Behaviors are hard to change. If we didn't have tablets, phones, and mobile devices, we could all revert back to 1990s web design with tiny graphics, flash technology, and the Times New Roman font. But then again, aren't we too evolved for all that now? Haven't we as a species come too far, then revert back to 14.4, 28.8, or 33.6 Baud modem speed? There is a certain nostalgia of actually "hearing" yourself go on the internet using a detachable modem connected to your desktop computer and big clunky monitor though. There was always a certain "high" you got if you successfully connected after 8 or 9 attempts, assuming you had a few kilobytes of free RAM and your NCSA Mosaic browser could still access Alta Vista, and that it could take upwards to 3 or 4 hours to download a single GIF image. And let's not forget that every time the phone rang, you'd get immediately disconnected from the internet. Yes, not exactly an efficient way of accessing information anymore.

Hmm I am pretty sure you could see the spine number of each title in the list before, that's enough of a change to boycott the site I think

Their new website seems pretty odd. A total memory hog.

I quite liked the old layout, it was rather simple and resourceful.

... One step forward, two steps back.

Thinking more about the new site. At the risk of sounding a bit pretentious, aside from being much more attractive and easier to use, the old site had a "scholarly" and "authoritative" look and feel befitting the Criterion Mission Statement (which we all know so I won't cut and paste here). The new site might be more "modern" but lacks the gravitas of the old site. Just my take on it.

After reading your post I have to agree... I'm also not a big fan of website redesigns simply to make it look better on a phone. When I'm accessing it on a computer I don't want it to look like a giant ipad...

That closet is so last millennium. It looks like the kind of place my grandparents would have used to...I don't know...store stuff.

Things like shelves and walls were fine in their day and yeah, sure, they do still actually work pretty well when it comes to separating spaces and keeping stuff from just sitting in piles on the floor but surely we can do better.

And don't we owe it to ourselves to try?
