Perhaps you should try to control your obsessive behavior of rubbing your Bottle Rocket against your Red Shoes........
[Show spoiler] I didn't want to say your 8 1/2 against your El Norte, and give you too much credit

My "Notorious" 8 1/2 is rubbed alot as it is. CC's mom saw it last night and left her Breathless. I said "Why don't you try 400 Blows" but she wanted Playtime first to get In the Mood for Love. Then she saw my dog's Thin Red Line and left her in a state of Repulsion. I said "why don't you get Naked" and let's get down with the F (for fake that is) before I catch a couple Z's tonight. Then I heard a knock on the front door of the House and it was her Sisters "Sid & Nancy" (don't ask me why her sister is named Sid). Well I found out Sid was a dude so I said "It was Bad Timing", and I just Ran before I got a Taste of Cherry.

MASTER CG! Goodnight everyone! See ya in the morning!

Only 400 Blows? I'd have thought you'd have gone for The Small Back Room, CG...

Army of Shadows is prob the best Melville movie Criterion has. Also it's StudioCanal, which means Elevator to the Gallows could still see a blu release.

Broadcast News can be thrown out the window, and...

Haven't seen Robinson Crusoe on Mars, but that is significant to me because if they can release that, they can release pretty much anything with no crying "that it didn't sell well".
Are we sure Army of Shadows is StudioCanal? The DVD says 'Under exclusive license from Rialto Pictures'.

Where is this info that Robinson Crusoe on Mars didn't sell well coming from?

Also - Broadcast News may not be to your interest, but it's a solid film that has needed a better release for a while now.

Any news on when The Game will be released. And will Criterion ever release Hard Boiled, The Killer, The Rock, and Armageddon on Blu-Ray. Waiting for BF to pick up The Thin Red Line, will also pick up Broadcast News

My mother would be proud, CG. I'm pretty sure she's had a similar dream about you, as well. I'm pretty sure she's been craving some of that young stuff lately since my stepfather, unfortunately, looks like Wilford Brimley.

Do you have a link to show what the sales were like on Robinson Crusoe? I know it's not a flagship title for Criterion, but I thought it sold a decent amount of units. It's one of the 20 or so titles (out of 522) Criterion has had up in their site's shop for artwork for the past couple of years.

1. It might be Rialto Pictures. I may of got that wrong.

2. I was meaning lower tier title. Like they would want to put this out before how many flagship titles and new titles? Not hating on it. Haven't seen it. Go and buy it if you want. I just see it as good news for me, that they would pop out with stuff like this instead of going all Seven Samurai or Breathless everytime they re-release.

3. Opinions man. It was a joke anyways. Why would I spend $30 to toss it out a window?

Edit: Ah ha! I found this on CriterionForum about Army of Shadows:

"While it is licensed from Rialto, the copright is attributed to "StudioCanal Image/Fono Roma (Italie)", and there's a StudioCanal logo stamped on the bottom. It's unquestionably an SC-held title."

In all seriousness do you think that Criterion would ever pickup and release "The Jerk"?

Oh, opinions are fine. It's just that you were describing the film to someone who hasn't seen it, and I was making a counterpoint to your dismissal. Just as you would to mine if I said Pierrot le fou could be tossed out a window (because I wouldn't spend $30 on it, personally).

SC may hold the rights, but it they licensed the rights to Rialto for a certain amount of time - say, through 2012 - then Criterion's license from Rialto would still be valid, and not directly through SC.

No news on The Game other than that it's being worked on. It could be as soon as February, but will likely be sometime in 2011.

Hard Boiled and The Killer are very unlikely as they no longer have the rights to either film. There have been cases in the past of Criterion regaining rights to films (such as Salo) but there's nothing, even on the rumor front, of this happening to Woo's films.

The Rock and Armageddon. Not impossible, but fairly unlikely for three reasons.

First, there are currently well produced Blu-rays of both titles (The Rock even maintains many of the Criterion extras) it's not impossible to licence these titles for dual release - it's happened before, but it's unlikely.

Second, The Rock and Armageddon were released for a large number of political reasons in their day which no longer exist. They were given to Criterion as part of a package to receive other less mainstream titles and they provided an economic shot in the arm that Criterion needed during their entry to DVD. They are also considred by many to be the two least worthy titles of Criterion release and as such there's a smaller market among Criterion collectors for these titles. (Larger audience in the general public perhaps, but see reason number 1)

Third, Criterion was undergoing a minor identity change in the late nineties. In the Laserdisc days they had a much wider reach in terms of obtaining rights and released far more contemporary titles (Pulp Fiction, Ghostbusters, etc) but with the DVD explosion they refined their focus to the more avant garde. Criterion 2010 is a different beast than the company that released the Bay titles.

So none of your four titles is impossible, but I would probably rate them as possibly the four least likely titles to be revisited of the entire collection.

Nonetheless, I wish you well in your quest to find quality Blu-rays of those titles.
