Is it worth a watch?
How you feel about The Tree of Life will probably depend on how you feel about Malick in general. Have you seen other Terrence Malick movies?

I found it spellbinding but then i'm a big fan of Days of Heaven, The New World, The Thin Red Line etc etc

I saw The New world and I remember it being incredibly slow paced. I don't remember much of the movie to be honest I suppose it's worth another watch.

I think it's the worst of the best, but still really funny, mainly because of Ameche. I'd say "To Be Or Not To Be" is his flat-out best period, "Heaven Can Wait" is closer to the bottom of the top shelf, but I'd still lump it in with his really good ones.

if you thought New World was slow paced, then this 50 min extended cut of Tree of Life wont be something for you.

Then you would also find Tree of Life slow paced. A better film IMO but it doesn't sound like Malick is your cup of tea.

Good to know, I hate to say this I really REALLY do but I am in-fact that audience member who can't sit still, especially in long movies. Even some of my favorites are a bit of a chore to watch. Gone with the Wind, Barry Lyndon, 2001, I loved them all, but I couldn't watch the whole thing in one viewing. I have to put it down and come back later, like reading a book.

But I'll get through it. The only time I have ever turned away from a movie in the middle of it is Moonrise Kingdom. (I can't do dead dogs, I don't mean like the dead dogs in Akira or Rear Window, I mean like up close dead dogs or something like Marley and Me. I will sit through the bloodiest, goriest, David Chronenburg-iest film this side of cannibal holocaust before I sit through something like Marley and Me.)

Smithereens will be the most immediate purchase from this group for me. I haven't seen it since VHS days, but I remember liking it - the Feelies soundtrack alone seals it. I'm so glad they chose this over the director's more popular film, Desperately Seeking Susan.

Smithereens sounds dope. I'll probably pick up that and TOL.

I know nothing about the others.

I watched my Criterion copy of The Thin Red Line just after Midnight today & forgot how much I adore this film. The beauty of this film cannot be put down in words

Great cast, love the extras. The casting videos are really interesting. Strange to see Johnny Galecki (Big Bang Theory) & neil Patrick Harris audition. ow to listen to the commentary

Count me as someone who likes the Tree of Life artwork. Hope its a digibook too as speculated, it will go nice beside my New World digibook.

Last night for some reason I felt like some Lubitsch was going to be announced. I was thinking Trouble in Paradise. But Heaven Can Wait works too.

I'm in for both of those.

The Tree of Life is hard to describe. It's an experience.

This is what I told a friend at the time:

I was horribly depressed when I sat down to watch it, and that was actually a fitting mood to be in. The movie served almost as background music while I wallowed in my own anguished feelings.

As I thought about my own life, the movie served as a meditation on life in general, through the lens of this one family.

Very powerful, evocative filmmaking. Very uncomfortable because it makes you really think about your own life.

I don't think it's something I can ever watch again, and I don't know that I can recommend it to people, but it was definitely a powerful experience for me.

That's the one I'm super curious about. Looks great and Olmos has repeatedly shown up in things I really like.

I would love for them to change that cover art for TOL. The focal point to my eye is Jessica Chastain’s oil nose... It fits the tone of the movie if it’s strictly about the mother’s relationship with the children. I had more personal connection with Mr O’Brien and his son Jack, or Jack’s questioning of God and It’s ‘choices’ of why things are they way they are. I have a poster framed of the collage print in my garage. I love it.

Definitely. It's really damn good. It seems the reactions to this month's titles are "OMG Tree of Life" and nothing else really garnered much of a response, so that's a title that could get really lost in the ether. It's one of those that I'm sure is a labor of love for Criterion and won't sell too many copies, but I'll definitely pick it up.

It kind of reminds me of the classic 1940s Western "The Ox-Bow Incident".
