I'll double dip on The Tree of Life, and I'm in for Heaven Can Wait. I love me some Gene Tierney. As for The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez, I've never seen it, but I like Edward James Olmos quite a lot. So, maybe I'll just blind buy that.

Don't care about the Smithereens one iota.

"Smithereens" is a raw, cool, surprisingly tender film. I actually had a buddy in a film history class in college who had the DVD from Blue Underground and I borrowed it from him multiple times. I'm a big fan. Hopefully, more people will discover it because of the Criterion release.

No must-haves for me this month. I've not seen Tree of Life so maybe in a future 50% sale.

You probably shouldn't say the last part like you are proud of it lol. I like movies also but would never choose one over a girl.

Great cast, love the extras. The casting videos are really interesting. Strange to see Johnny Galecki (Big Bang Theory) & neil Patrick Harris audition. ow to listen to the commentary
I blew my butt off!!!!

For some reason I just couldn't take the movie seriously after that. It's a great anti-war film but it doesn't accurately portray the horrors of war as well as other war films out there.

I'm most excited that The Tree of Life includes the "extended version" of the movie that's an additional 50 minutes long - fantastic!

I, too, think the cover is a bit dark for the film, though. The thing about The Tree of Life is that the tone of the film varies between viewers and different viewings. Sometimes I watch it and I see nothing but the negative aspects - the vituperative father, abandonment, etc. Other times I watch it and I see nothing but positive notes - kids being kids, staying out until dark, reminiscing of a childhood. Hopefully they change it to something closer to Days of Heaven cover.

Smithereens looks like a blind buy for me. I love Repo Man, Wild at Heart, River's Edge, & Something Wild, so it seems like a slam dunk.

Yeah, I’m all in for the Tree of Life, but this one really has my interest. I’ve never seen it before, but I feel pulled to this film and I can’t quite explain it. Maybe it’s the 80s punk vibe...I don’t know...but those films you just listed I absolutely love. Yeah. I’m definitely picking up Smithereens. I may never even watch anything else beyond that trailer. Totally blind otherwise

You know what? Most people get that talking during a movie is pretty disrespectul, but if I was a girl and I got a text from a guy like that, I'd think you were some antisocial creep and wouldn't have met up with you either.

Sometimes for the greater good, you have to put your personal quirks aside and when it comes to possibly getting laid vs. escaping into a film, yeah, the film takes a back seat every time.

Then go to movies alone or only take dates to movies you've seen already.

(I'm not even disagreeing with the way you feel - I feel the same way while watching movies - but you can't impose your will on social outings.)

If the wrapper is from something sold by the theater, nobody had the right to yell at her!

Yell at ****ing theater management!!!

Maybe once we have something steady going on I'd explain my passion for film and how I prefer not to be distracted.

You can always go to the theater again by yourself and re-watch a film but you don't always get a second chance to meet someone decent because you made her feel unimportant as soon as you met her.

Again...just my humble opinion

I've fallen asleep during Where The Wild Things Are, Tropic Thunder, and at a film festival when watching 10 films over 3 or 4 days.

...and if people want to walk out, I'd say that's fine, too. cut your losses, right? nothing more valuable than time. screw the 10 bucks. if it sucks, it sucks.

I really did not expect my posting about choosing a film over a girl to create such a polarizing reaction from everyone.

Maybe I should elaborate a bit though...

First of all, I was being a very sincere and sweet gentleman, but a question came up regarding theater etiquette. Most women I've talked to would come up with a sarcastic or cynical response, but there was something truly wrong that an ethical question like this, about treating other people with respect and consideration, would be met with such hostility and ignorance. Mind you, we were never planning on meeting for a first date at a movie theater, but as I continued to get to know her, I realized she and I were not the right match. It was a dealbreaker for her, not me, that apparently holding hands or making out publicly in a movie theater is not something I've done or used to doing with dates or friends or whomever I'm with. Maybe some of us prefer to have space. To each their own. But its not fair to judge me so harshly based on the fact that I'm an ungrateful snob when it comes to movie-watching. I don't think I am. I just like when people respect others, including me. This woman seemed to be quite unstable, she was coming out of a traumatic divorce, and she seemed to have major trust issues with men in general, even assuming if "I'm an axe murderer" or not. I personally do not like when certain people always assume every man is out to rape or murder them. Not every man is a rapist or murderer. This was a woman who needed to be persuaded that "men in general can be good humans". This was another red flag. Call it "daddy issues" if you want, but this wasn't a woman who seemed very easygoing. I was absolutely reasonable and if this person wouldn't have been so suspicious and fearful, this might have been a good first date.

Furthermore, I just found out at the time (a month ago) that my dad has Cancer, and not only does he have Cancer, but he has just a few months left to live. Perhaps my mind wasn't right, perhaps I wasn't in a jolly merry mood, perhaps I had a lot of distractions on my end. But knowing my dad's Esophageal Cancer spread not only to his bones, but his lymph nodes and his liver did not really help my mood at the time. I didn't need to be around a woman who assumed I was a murderer. I believe there are SOME women out there who don't go walking around with such thoughts on a constant basis, but perhaps I'm wrong (though I don't think I am). So yeah, that's the story.

Next time, before tearing me a new a$$hole, I'll make sure to be a bit less blunt and a bit more candid. Thanks.

Apparently John Cameron Mitchell confirmed in an Instagram live video that Hedwig is in the works. Having trouble tracking down anything concrete and linkable, though.

Edit: oh nm. Turns out thats old news... Some Twitter chatter sent me googling and I didn't check dates closely enough

With your black flag avatar, I assume you like old school punk so it is a definite must to watch with Richard Hell in the movie.

Tree of Life is a definite purchase, as well as Smithereens so I can ditch the old DVD from Blue Underground. Smithereens is a terrific little indy and a great time capsule.

FWIW, it sounds like you'd both like Smithereens. Those movies you mentioned are right in my 80s sweet spot too, and this one fits in there nicely. I tend to prefer my 80s having that neon with a darker underbelly to the more sweet & whimsical vibe that usually encapsulates the decade.

And not that it matters that much, but on the subject of covers, the one for Smithereens is badass.

I must be one of the few people that actually likes the cover of Tree of Life. I probably won't be getting it because I already own it.
