I understood Penn's role. I didn't know anyone had a problem with it but I shoulda figured if they did it'd be a silly problem.

Well, Penn is the one who has the problem with it, so it can't be that silly.

Artwork is better, but still pretty generic and not very creative by Criterions standards but still great and being digital will have extra artworks inside!

So happy about this release!

Also bonus, just got my Dogville tattoo! (got the outline of the town on my shoulder :P, had to be slightly altered to work but im happy!)

I mean, different strokes & all but that's one of the movie's most stunning images & it's not generic at all imo

I meant the composition and design layout is generic, the images of course, are stunning.

And the Benjamin B video essay too on the cinematography.

(And they removed Neil Kellerhouse's name for the cover)

So I was watching Yi Yi and I fell asleep. I guess tomorrow I’ll pick up where I left off.

Edit: I finished Yi Yi and I must say what a beautiful film. It’s a rarity in that I wanted another 3 hours of the movie. Highly recommended if it’s lying in the unwatched pile or to pick up during the upcoming sale. What really fascinated me was Yang’s use of the mirrored imaged or reflection. The shots outside the vehicle, the apartment and hotel windows, and to an extent the photographs really added depth to the characters.

A GREAT film!
Here were my thoughts on Yi Yi when I saw it for the first time a few years ago.

Regarding Edward Yang in the CC... I was very surprised to see brand new copies of A Brighter Summer Day going for $12.95 on eBay last weekend. I don't know if there are any still left, but it is quite surprising that such a great film - a modern, accessible one, too, would be such a poor seller that vendors had to mark it down so much.

Just bought the Criterion Scanners release on Amazon without realizing they were out of stock; now I have to wait for it. Such a classic movie, more people need to watch. Anyone else have this one? Is it a good release?

Maybe it’s just me, but would anyone else be down for a Criterion release of The Last Waltz?

I have viewed my copy some time ago. Is it a good release? Depends on how bent up one gets over the coloring--I think it was debated extensively back in the day, but IIRC the Criterion copy has a lot more of a blue/teal thing going on with it.

Other than that, I remember it looking perfectly sharp and clear with fine and natural-looking film grain.

The movie itself wowed me more on the first viewing than it did on the second. Now that I'm more familiar with Cronenberg's work, I oughta re-evaluate it and see how it holds up to a third viewing.

So, I went to Wikipedia (I know, not the most reliable source) to look up the names of the films in the Koker Trilogy. Here's what is printed:

The Koker trilogy is a series of three films directed by acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami: Where Is the Friend's Home? (1987), And Life Goes On (a.k.a. Life and Nothing More, 1992) and Through the Olive Trees (1994). The designation was made by film theorists and critics, rather than by Kiarostami himself, who resists the designation and notes that the films are connected only by the accident of place (referring to the fact that Koker is the name of a northern Iranian village). He has suggested that it might be more appropriate to consider the latter two titles plus Taste of Cherry (1997) as a trilogy, since these are connected by the theme of life's preciousness.[1]

Since it is a box, I am hoping that Taste of Cherry is included. Oh, and throw in Ten (2002) and Homework (1989,) too!

Looks great. Day one for me (July 24th; hopefully, the B&N event will still be in full swing ).
