Hey, if this thread does nothing else, it does get that info out there to folks.

I've been vegetarian since the 80s and vegan since the 90s (and the latter is really tough when it comes to stuff like clothing, because you wind up spending a ton more to get decent shoes), and because of all the issues with restaurants and how they operate (even up here in the NW, which is supposed to be heaven for these types of eateries), it has been nearly a decade since my wife and I have even eaten out.

I had tried watching this particular Tarkovsky right after seeing and adoring STALKER (top ten all-time), but for some reason just could not get into it at all (same thing happened with SOLARIS, which I've attempted viewing three times now. SOLARIS and HEAT are the pics I keep being told I will love, but every time I try, it just doesn't happen. Am thinking maybe I need to jump to the big gunfight in HEAT and use that to get me hooked on watching the rest. I can tell you watching the Clooney Solaris didn't help me with getting through the Tarkovsky.)

Was going to give ANDREI one more try, but the horse thing ensure that will definitely not happen. About the only film with actual animal violence in it that I watch is APOCALYPSE NOW, (another top 10 all-time for me), and I can only justify that on the basis that they were permitted to film an event that was going to happen anyway.

I don't think that "entertainment" was the idea. Can people please at least watch a film before they publicly condemn it?

I think perhaps the point some are making is that while film can be many things (artistic; philosophical; educational; visionary; provocative; etc.), at its heart it is "entertainment".

Not really. It's justifiable for one to be uncomfortable watching an animal be killed for the sake of a film. Now if they're condemning others that decide to watch it, that's another argument.

How would people even boycott Criterion? By not buying one of their releases? Then I have "boycotted" 90% of the entire collection.

I hope that nobody hears that Criterion has released Heaven's Gate, surely the company would be decimated!

Didn't they basically kill the horse for the slaughterhouse? That's a bit different than just killing a horse and dumping its carcass off somewhere imo.

That said I don't like real on-screen animal deaths but I'd still watch the movie.

I LOVE animals. They taste good. And I will NEVER boycott Criterion. I will support them for every banned, offensive, tasteless and insulting movie they release (even Michael Moore movies). Thank you Criterion !!

Okay. Just checked, I can still handle Andrei Rublev. This is a Tarkovsky film, not Cannibal Holocaust. You'd think ppl who seem so into film & post here every day would have seen Rublev by now but, no & when they find out about some not so nice scenes involving animals they cry and refuse to watch it.
Grow Up.

Good to know animal cruelty is okay when filmed by a lauded Russian director, but not in a low-budget Italian horror flick...
