Friend of mine got only Fellowship of the Ring on blu-ray because that was all he wanted. At least these are only thematically linked films, not directly related installments.

Regardless of proving anyone's point I think he's a very talented guy and I've enjoyed most movies I have seen him in.

But they are directly related. That's the entire point.

Even though they are connected to a degree, all three films could be watched, and enjoyed independently of the others. They're sold individually in Germany, and Mexico.

Jesus, what was I thinking? Of course you're right! I was aware that he was invited to Hollywood because of his international fame for grand epics such as Madame Dubarry (1919) and still wrote that stupid remark. Perhaps my overenthusiasm for selling To Be or Not to Be blinded my mind momentarily. Thanks for the correction!

I'm surprised no review for for The Virgin Spring yet. Anyone else seen the disc yet?

I'll be picking it up during the sale for sure.

I added it to my sale list based on the Beaver review:

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDRev...ng_blu-ray.htm

A blind-buy. I'm relatively new to the work of Bergman.

It'd be nice if they were released in cases and not digipacks. But they could release it as three cases in a hard slipbox. That would be preferred. I'd buy all three even if they were released individually.

Finally saw 49th Parallel as part of TCM's June tribute to Leslie Howard. I hope Criterion would upgrade their DVD as its another Powell/Pressburger film. IIRC, ITV would have this and it has a French release from Carlotta so supposedly there must be a good restoration somewhere.

I've not seen a lot of Bergman's films, but The Virgin Spring might be my favorite of his (alongside Persona). I'm so excited to finally get the Blu-ray.

Considering he's not a real person, never.

But a customer service rep will answer in a pretty timely fashion.

Other than "The Smiling Lieutenant", they're showing all of my favorites as well, naturally including "To Be Or Not To Be".

One small thing, though; Lubitsch was not a refugee from the Nazis, he came to America in 1921 and was already established as one of the top directors in Hollywood before Hitler was elected. He did hate the Nazis, and he did have family that remained under Hitler, but his reasons for leaving Germany were not political.
Lubitsch wasn't fleeing Nazis, but he was fleeing the worst depression the world has even seen.

Take a look sometime on how much it cost for a loaf of bread in Germany in 1921 - 1924. the runaway inflation led to a depression well ahead of the rest of the world. It took a week's pay just to feed your family....

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperi...eimar_Republic

The depression which Germany experienced gave the German people the desperation needed to vote Hitler into office.

Come and See has a page up on Criterion:

Someone posted that Mosfilm had the title up on their Youtube channel albeit without subtitles.

I could honestly do without Three Colors: White in my collection ( if I were ever to thin it, that is). Blue and Red are great films and I don't feel like White adds anything to my experience of either.

I just realized that The Virgin Spring will be my first time watching an Ingmar Bergman film.

I think Scenes from a Marriage will be my 2nd Bergman film once that blu-ray comes out.

EDIT: Scratch that. I think Persona will be my 2nd Bergman film since Marriage is coming out later this year. I read a synopsis on Persona and i'm game for it.

Speaking of Lubitsch's earlier work, I wish Kino would upgrade their Lubitsch in Berlin DVD set(I believe they released the set just in DVD).

It was Mary Pickford who contracted Lubitsch as a director to originally work on Dorothy Vernon of Haddon Hall which was aborted though later made but with a different director, then Faust(which was Pickford's mother nixed), before they ended up making Rosita. After all of that, Lubitsch became a free agent
