I have the BBS set and it’s one of my favourite box sets. Even the lesser films are interesting and I know everyone seems to hate A Safe Place but it’s paired up on the same disc as Drive He Said so it’s almost like it’s just a bonus feature. I would encourage anyone who wants more than just one of those movies to simply get the set.

Exactly, it's a bargain at the price now. Even if someone is only a fan of one or two films in the set, I'd jump on it. (When it's at the full price of $90 or more, it might be harder to justify, though.) And the very thick book that comes with it has a great history of BBS, as well as essays on the individual films. I'm not even a big fan of most of the movies in the set (didn't care for Easy Rider or Head, haven't even watched A Safe Place yet), yet I still don't feel I overpaid.

Speaking of sets. I'd give my first born child if Criterion put out a box set with the complete works of Kenneth Anger on Blu Ray. Something similar to the Les Blank set they put out. Kenneth Anger is equally or even known more than Les Blank, so there is precedence. All his films are short films though, I don't know if that might trip them up. But Kenneth Anger really needs to be represented better on Blu Ray.

The last time around I went with a Western theme, this time I saved up specifically for the sale and got 4 Grant's, 2 Alfred's and 2 Kurosawa's.
Hopefully gonna go with 2 horror and maybe 2 noir next paycheck. $155.08 total / $19.38 average.

There's the region-free BFI set, though BFI only ported the commentaries from the Fantoma release.

I'm actually surprised the Fantoma DVD is still in print since they haven't released anything since 2008, it seems.

Yeah, I'm not sure why some people are so reluctant with that box set. "The King of Marvin Gardens" features one of Jack's most nuanced performances, great performances from Bruce Dern and Ellen Burstyn, and is a terrific slice of 70s cinema. "Head" is a really fun time capsule IMO. "Drive, He Said" is a flawed film, mainly due to some of the performances, but is certainly worth watching because Nicholson does some really fascinating things as a director. And "A Safe Place", while pretty bad, certainly isn't any worse than a lot of 70s experimental cinema.

I am on my phone and can’t link to them but Criterion Cast Twitter has photos of Sex, Lies, and Videotape and the packaging is SEXY. It has a clear slip.

I'm hoping for a standalone release of Head. I own the individual Five Easy Pieces and Easy Rider so no way I'm buying the box.

Wow! So the actual picture is clear and the glossy/VHS-ish quality was from the clear slip?!! That is awesome. I’m digging this package. Yes I am excited

Thanks to everyone for recommending silent films. I recently bought some mentioned during the Kino sale. But for the Criterion sale I’ll be picking up The Gold Rush, Safety Last!, and The Phantom Carriage. I have yet to see an Ozu or Naruse but I feel like starting with an early film isn’t such a good idea.

That SL&VT digipak.

Looks like I'm going to have to cough up an extra $3 for "gift packaging" when I order it from Amazon in order to minimize the risk of damage under shipping as much as possible.

I noticed that Criterion posted an image from Do The Right Thing on Twitter. I hope that we'll get an upgrade sooner than later.

My B&N sale haul is quite humble this cycle. Decided it's better to focus on what I know I want instead of going hog-wild crazy like I did last time and winding up with titles I didn't care about.

So these three came in.

The Virgin Spring is probably the thing I wanted the most, and chances are I'll be popping it in shortly. The others are blind-buys--wanted more John Waters, I find his work interesting, and Phantom Carriage was a title that came up quite a bit when I ran the community fantasy poll. I expect greatness out of them.

Am I missing something... can you no longer reserve titles for pickup at a nearby B&N store?

Nope. You have to call the store and have an employee reserve titles for you.

You know, I don't know any of these movies but the box art sure looks classy. Got half a mind to get one myself during the sale. Good haul sir!

You did well taking a chance on The Phantom Carriage, it's quite good. Female Trouble....well good luck with that one.
