[Show spoiler]•Digital transfer (box set edition); new, restored high-definition digital transfer (two-DVD and Blu-ray editions), with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition
•Introduction by Ingmar Bergman, recorded in 2003 (two-DVD and Blu-ray only)
•Audio commentary by Bergman expert Peter Cowie, with a new afterword on the two-DVD and Blu-ray editions
•Bergman Island (2006), an 83-minute documentary on Bergman by Marie Nyreröd, featuring in-depth and revealing interviews with the director (two-DVD and Blu-ray only)
•Archival audio interview with Max von Sydow (two-DVD and Blu-ray only)
•A 1989 tribute to Bergman by filmmaker Woody Allen (two-DVD and Blu-ray only)
•Theatrical trailer
•Bergman 101, a selected video filmography tracing Bergman’s career, narrated by Cowie (two-DVD and Blu-ray only)
•An annotated, illustrated Bergman filmography, featuring excerpts from Wild Strawberries and The Magician with commentary (box set only)
•Optional English-dubbed soundtrack
•New and improved English subtitle translation
•PLUS: A new essay by Cowie (box set edition); a booklet featuring a new essay by critic Gary Giddins (two-DVD and Blu-ray editions)
New cover by Neil Kellerhouse (two-DVD and Blu-ray editions); new cover by Gordon Reynolds (box set edition)

I note some features say (two-DVD and Blu-Ray only) while others say (box set only). Does this mean not all features will be present? Or just odd wording? Or are the box set edition features brand new to the set?

Definitely shooting to pick this up. That's for sure.
Oooof! The choices here!

Set advantages:
Many movies I don't have
Way less room on the shelves
Set disadvantages:
Far fewer special features/commentaries (I think)
I already have a lot of these films
But I have to balance this latter with the possibility that the ones I don't have will be released individually. However, that hasn't happened with the Tati or the Demy sets.

Dang....glad I have several months to think about this.

Luckily I just have The Seventh Seal, so I would be getting all them for the first time. Though even if I did have a lot of them I would double-dip on this one.

OK, I like the olympics. I have never seen any of these movies, and I probably wouldn't watch most of them anytime soon, but it could be cool to have around and boring day I can always pop one of these on and relive some of the glory or experience some history I never knew about.

I assume this set comes highly recommended?
My quick take in answer to your question: I think the real appeal of the set is not the pure "sport" documented per se (of which there is plenty), but the broader cultural and geopolitical themes that have impacted many of the Games in the modern era, and which are represented in many of the films (although I have not yet watched them all). Plus, some of the films are seriously well made (Riefenstahl's and Ichikawa's entries are probably the most obvious highlights for well-deserved reasons, while a personal favourite would be Alberto Isaac's outstanding record of the Mexico Games in '68).

Hard to beat at the price. If you think you might enjoy it, then go for it.

Being a Woody Allen fan, I'm predisposed to liking Bergman, though, admittedly, I've seen very little of his work.

I've got an old DVD (Non-Criterion) of Persona as well as JUST purchased The Virgin Spring Blu-Ray.

However, I have 4 or 5 Blu-Rays currently in my Barnes and Noble cart that I haven't had a chance to purchase yet... So I'll take it as a sign.

Day One purchase on this set.

I'm glad I've been lazy about purchasing The Virgin Spring. 39 movies for an affordable price. Good deal.

It's tempting to speculate which director is due for the next big set but sometimes ya gotta stop asking for more and give Criterion its due.

That set is just insane. I honestly thought it would be priced higher, which I would have been fine with.

Time to sell my current Bergman blus.

Not "far fewer". I looked through the titles Criterion already released on Blu-ray and The Seventh Seal is the only one with differing special features (and newer restoration for the box set!). Even then, Bergman Island documentary will be included in the upcoming set. I suspect there'll be a dedicated special features disc considering that if we substract standalone titles there's 15 discs for 27 titles, so likely 2 titles per disc + 1 disc for special features.

Note to self: e-mail Jon Mulvaney about which existing Blu-rays (besides The Seventh Seal) will be remastered.

Are you saying that the (couple-years-old) stand-alone The Seventh Seal release is made from a newer master than the version of The Seventh Seal in this yet-to-be-released box set?!

I just got back from my local Barnes and Noble and exchanged my unopened The Virgin Spring for The Age of Innocence. I will be selling my other Bergman Criterions, and will gladly make the purchase for this collection in November. In the process, this will clear off a lot of desperately needed shelf space!

By the way, my Hour of the Wolf wish has come true!

The existing Blu-ray of The Seventh Seal was released in 2009. It's almost 10 years old.
