It seems like a Godzilla boxset would be more up Arrow Video's alley.

Is Dekalog a safe blind buy? I want to watch it on FilmStruck but it’s not available. I’ve seen the first installment and was bored through much of it until the end, but after seeing it all play out I think I’d enjoy it a lot more the second time. (Also the video quality was very poor so that may have had something to do with my lack of focus.)

Or would the Colors trilogy be a better introduction for this filmmaker?

If you want an introduction you could start with a single film and see how you like it:

The UK release is region-free, has some terrific extras and much cheaper.

A few days late to the huge news of the Bergman box set but when I saw the Criterion email in my inbox I was astounded too. I'm not the biggest Bergman fan (I have to be in the right mood to watch his films and its pretty rare for me generally), but this is obviously going to be probably the greatest Criterion box set in existence upon its release this November. I only own 5 Bergman movies (The Seventh Seal, Persona, Wild Strawberries, Autumn Sonata, The Magician). This will be the big holiday gift for many this upcoming holiday season.

Would I be safe in buying the four film set by Agnes Varda, or is there a chance it'll see a Blu-ray release?

Maybe Godzilla box set, but so close to Bergman, a set of this size seems unlikely.

List of upgrades in development that we’re aware of:
1. The Magic Flute - #71
2. A Film Trilogy by Ingmar Bergman - #208-212
[Show spoiler]
Quote:
Additionally, Criterion will be releasing a series of Blu-ray editions of some of Bergman's most essential films, beginning with upgrades of The Virgin Spring (now available) and Scenes from a Marriage (available September 4) and continuing with new editions of Shame and The Magic Flute, as well as a Blu-ray upgrade of the box set A Film Trilogy by Ingmar Bergman: "Through a Glass Darkly," "Winter Light," and "The Silence."

3. Notorious - #137
[Show spoiler]

4. Fists in the Pocket - #333

NEW 4K RESTORATION
Directed by Marco Bellocchio
Music by Ennio Morricone
(1965) Ah, la famiglia. In a country house outside Piacenza, a blind mother holds all the deeds, while elder brother Augusto, the only one with a job, wants to marry his way out, but it’s hard to do after his fiancée receives an incriminating letter, obviously from sister Giulia, who in turn has to fend off under-the-table footsying from epileptic brother Lou Castel and his barely suppressed rage (think of the title)… Add man-child youngest brother Leone, some murder attempts (two successful), an epileptic fit or two, and Castel’s magnetically hateful performance for a scabrous look at an Italian institution – Bellocchio’s debut. (The villa was borrowed from his own mother.) DCP restoration. Approx. 105 min.
A JANUS FILMS RELEASE

5. Tunes of Glory - #225
[Show spoiler]
Quote:
This screening is the world restoration premiere. Restored by the Academy Film Archive and The Film Foundation in collaboration with Janus Films and The Museum of Modern Art. Restoration funding provided by the George Lucas Family Foundation

Not confirmed anywhere yet, but this would leave Sawdust and Tinsel as the only Bergman release with a Spine # not to have a standalone Blu-ray release, so an individual upgrade for it is highly likely.

Ozu's Floating Weeds got a new 4K restoration, which screened in NYC a couple months back through Janus,.so a release is no doubt on its way.

Tunes of Glory should also be coming sooner than later.

October is typically a good month for Criterion releases.

This is what was announced last year:

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me
Barry Lyndon
Vampyr
The Lure
Personal Shopper
Lure

So I'm really looking forward to Monday.

Titles I'm hoping for:

Greed (never giving up hope)
More Kubrick
More Dreyer
Magnificent Ambersons
Notorious
Viridiana
La Strada
Annie Hall
Manhattan
Death in Venice
The Spirit of the Beehive

Any of these would make me happy.

What are your guys' plans for buying the Bergman box?
1). Pre-order from Criterion now?
2). Buy it during the B&N sale and hope you can find a copy?
3). Wait until the Feb Criterion sale and hope it's not exempt from the sale?

All of them were recently released on blu-ray as part of a larger Agnes Varda boxset by Artificial Eye in the UK, so I suspect they will be upgraded by Criterion sooner or later.

I'll just order preorder it in November from B&N and get it for half off on the 20th.

My plan so far is

Pasta. Lots and lots of pasta.
No new clothes or shoes or anything like that.
Put B&N gift cards on every wishlist I have.
Car had better keep working.
No new movies until then....?

Still working out the details.

Criterion only charges your card when it ships, right? That means you don't get the loyalty points until your card is charged?

I plan on pre-ordering from Amazon Canada as soon as it's available. However, if it doesn't drop to a price I'm happy with prior to release, I'll cancel that preorder and purchase from Barnes and Noble.

Obviously, it'll be more expensive than waiting for a sale, but after conversion and shipping, Amazon Canada's pre-order prices really aren't that bad. And I have no issues paying a bit more than I 'have' to for a set of this size.

None of the above. I'm going to get The Faith Trilogy, Shame and Hour of the Wolf. Not interested in a lot of the early material, Scenes from a Marriage, F&A and stuff like All These Women is a bore. Also, it's easier to have booklets inside cases when I want something to read on the crapper

I'm going to treat myself and pre-order from Criterion.

The purchase will net me the loyalty program $50 gift cert, effectively reducing the price to $189.96.
