I don’t know if I’d call Jules Dassin’s Rififi (1955) a suspense thriller-it falls more along the lines of a heist movie. But it’s a fantastic film, and one scene, in particular, keeps you on the edge of your seat. If you’re into those kinds of films, another great one is Stanley Kubrick’s The Killing (1956), starring Sterling Hayden. I suppose there’s always an element of suspense in these kinds of crime thrillers, as you wait to see what ultimately happens. Do the bad guys get away with their plots, or do the cops get wise? Criterion has some great movies in this vein-I’d say this film by Kubrick is his first masterpiece. Another I love is Michael Mann’s Theif (1981), starring James Caan, Tuesday Weld, Willie Nelson, Jim Belushi, Robert Prosky and Dennis Farina. Yet another film with suspenseful elements is Charles Laughton’s The Night of the Hunter (1955), starring Robert Mitchum, Shelley Winters, Lillian Gish and Peter Graves. This one is about the fight between good and evil, and you start to question “the Preacher’s” origins. Part film-noir (as is The Killing)-in my humble opinion, one of the greatest films ever made. These are all movies to own. |

The Innocents, Pan's Labyrinth, & Rebecca also have a lot of energy. And The Passion of Joan of Arc gives me palpitations. Hope this helps ![]() |

I would like to see the 1968 version of Romeo & Juliet join the collection or at least get some type of Bluray release. As for October I predict/hope that we'll get Altered States, Hedwig And The Angry Inch, maybe Freaks, potentially Funny Games (1997) but I doubt it, and Peeping Tom.

24 Frames would be cool because I don't believe there is any way to see it and I would like to see Kiarostami's full filmography

Stopped by the local B&N today, what an embarrassment it must be to work there now.
Very short on staff, the store manager was the one trying to find the Criterion title I was looking for...Bull Durham...which came out on this past Tuesday and still hadn't been shelved. |

Been on a Soderbergh kick lately. Bought 5 of his movies from the B&N sale and interested in the Spalding documentaries. Only Soderbergh movies I’ve never seen. Can anyone recommend them to a complete novie of Spalding’s work.

Just finished watching Limelight for the first time and really love it, easily a top 5 Chaplin for me. I can't recall a film of his that packs an emotional punch like that.

Hope this helps! Soderberg is one of my favorites. I hope Criterion can remedy the last few films of his yet to have BD releases. |

I just couldn't let July pass by without actually walking into a B&N store. My previous hauls have been online only, but since I was going out anyway I decided to swing by and take a look at the store.
I walked out buying these. ![]() Happy Birthday to me! ![]() Watching Burroughs right now--I figure it might speak to me as a writer. Can't say I like the guy's writing, but he is a nut and is sorta worth studying. |

It's typically viewed as one of Fellini's worst, but I think the consensus is wrong on that. |
