I've noticed a lot of posts predicting a Freaks announcement. Does any one know if Criterion has this title? Thanks in advance....

Hmmmm, I think you might be slightly disappointed. I don't think there is any nudity in it... however it is a great film. The word "naked" refers to the raw emotions evoked from the main characters. It's a bit of a "punk-rock" acting movie.

I’ve also heard that it’s dripping with nihilism and despair.

Anyone love or hate this film?

Can anyone confirm that we get to see David Thewlis naked?

...i’m a big fan of David Thewlis.

Welcome back Ray,
if you are looking for nudity may I recommend Desperate Living (1977) ? Hopefully a soon to be Criterion release (after Polyester)....

It’s gone mysteriously OOP like many Warner Criterion titles have before announcements. It’s also been replaced in a 4 pack with The Haunting, House of Wax, & Jekyll and Hyde (1941) by another film

Thanks for the info. Although I appreciate WAC and I LOVE the DVD with all the care and extras, I REALLY hope Criterion releases this on blu. Watching the DVD though gives me the same concern I have about The Thing From Another World. That is, some of the scenes really stand out as damaged in the DVDs and I wonder if they are beyond repair. I would be ok if they released them anyway, like the roadshow version of its a Mad Mad Mad Mad World with a "warning" so to speak. Criterion got a ton of crap for that roadshow version from ignorant non fans so they will probably be hesitant to go that route again.....

That seems like false advertising to me.

We don’t have double entendres or fancy metaphors where I come from.

Where I come from, we say what we mean and we mean what what we say.

...and we like to party.

My final B&N order was:

The Age of Innocence.
The Silence of the Lambs.
A Matter of Life and Death.
The Breakfast Club.
Elevator to the Gallows.
His Girl Friday.

I've only seen Lambs and Breakfast, the rest are blind-buys, but I'm pretty sure I've made some good choices!

Criterion has also stated they have a bunch of pre-code WB titles.

Just a heads up in case it's ever released on blu-ray, but this also isn't about what you think it is....

Oooo, I didn't know there were multiple ones.

Can't wait for those to start popping up.

My four most-wanted pre-codes under Warner Brothers' control are Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (Paramount, 1931) which is astonishing even today, The Mask of Fu Manchu (MGM, 1932) and the two-strip Technicolor thrillers directed by Michael Curtiz for First National Doctor X (1932) and The Mystery of the Wax Museum (1933). Each film merits the most amount of money Criterion can spend on them. The DVD's are okay but if Criterion can put hi-def transfers on bluray, that would be wonderful.

Baby Face was another but honestly they've barely scratched the surface for Pre-Code releases on Blu-ray. I say that regarding all studios and distributors.

Hey guys, trying to budget so I can only get one. Which one do you all recommend more? Dekalog or the Apu Trilogy? I’ve only seen the first installment in each, and found the Dekalog one intriguing and heartbreaking but a bit tedious.

Criterion mentioned a few years ago that they had some pre-code Warner in the pipeline. Nothing has happened on that front since then and I have long since given up hoping.

Still, I'd love to be surprised.

I will be watching a Matter Of Life and Death for the first time too. I’ve enjoyed all the P&P titles so far so I have high hopes for this one. I just got Elevator to The Gallows also, excited about that one. His Girl Friday is amazing and Hawks is one of my favorite directors. Red River and Only Angels Have Wings are amazing too. I really want The Thing From Another World and a properly restored version of Hatari!. The Age of Innocence was a bore to me. It does star a tandem of one of the best directors and actors of our time, and I know Scorcese most likely did this movie because of his love for Barry Lyndon. While it’s certainly in that vein it doesn’t come close for me, but some people really like it, and the acting is definitely solid.

Age of Innocence meh.
Blood Simple Excellent Cohen film. Might be my favorite.
Dr. Strangelove Kubrick is a God.
Hard Day’s Night Have Not Seen
Thin Red Line Strangely have not seen this one either

This is all subjective btw.

Haven’t seen the Night Porter, it most likely has some redeeming qualities though but Salo has none. Absolute filth and garbage.

So I finally saw Following and absolutely loved it. Shame that I went so long without ever seeing this film, in fact hadn't even heard of it until recently.

Discovering movies like that are what make the Criterion sales at B&N such a fun little event
