Polanski’s Macbeth is really good, and very faithful to the play. It’s just very bloody, and there’s some nudity with the witches. It’s been a while since I’ve seen it, but we watched it in high school when I was a senior.

Watched A Matter of Life and Death for the first time ever today. Wow. This is only my 4th P&P movie I’ve seen, but it jumped right to number 2 for me. Black narcissus is my favorite of theirs but I could see Life and Death possibly overtaking it after a few more viewings. Beautiful restoration. Hopefully Criterion gives us more P&P.

After watching Othello last night, I find myself intrigued by the idea of adding more Shakespeare to my collection. I already own Chimes at Midnight.

Also thinking about picking up Lost in America. But I’m concerned about the Albert Brooks factor.

...anyone not like it?
I remember liking Macbeth. I honestly don't like any other Polanski movie, but even he can't screw up that story.

It also helps that it uses genuine locations (Lindesfarne, been there a few times and it's quite a distinctive castle) and the film's acting, props, costumes are all solid. Can't say I ever felt an inkling to revisit the film, but I remember it being good, plain and simple.

Was not a fan of Lost in America, that story moved way too slowly for my liking and only one scene amused me (good ol' number 22). For a road-trip movie, I expected a lot more--doesn't have to be Dumb and Dumber funny, but I do find '86's Something Wild more palatable than LiA.

Last blind buy question...so sorry.

The Age of Innocence vs. A Room With A View?

I don’t know how similar they really are, but there does seem to be some common thread connecting them.

Which one is better IYO?

...I can’t get both.

I probably should have worded that as "I don't like the ones I've seen."

  • Chinadown (gave it quite a few tries, but I can't really follow the plot/mystery all that well and I find it incredibly droll. Which is a shame because I do like Jack Nicholson's character/performance and the whole nose-cutting scene, and the cinematography is top-notch, but the story overall just falls flat. Maybe because the stakes of it (water?) doesn't really compel me to care)
  • Rosemary's Baby (saw a few times, it bores me)
  • Repulsion (looked good and all, but it bored me and I don't even remember much about it right now)
  • The Ninth Gate (did like certain aspects of it, but like the other movies I found the actual plotting droll)
The trend I see in all of these is that the films don't have the forward momentum or significant plot hooks that keep me engaged. Macbeth might be the only exception I know of right now, but the plot/pace is inherent to the source.

All that being said, the films do have their beauty and merit and are worth seeing. And yes, I will get to The Pianist some day. I'm not against seeing more of his works, but so far a lot of it failed to truly connect to me.

I highly recommend you check out Frantic. It's not top tier Polanski, but I enjoy it quite a bit, and it's a more straightforward movie than most of his others.

I like Polanski's MACBETH very much, even better than Well's.

Basically, there are two things you need to know: (1) It's very bloody, (2) Lady Macbeth's "Out, out damn spot" soliloquy is performed nude. If this intriguers you, you will probably like it. If not, you probably won't.

After spending a fortune on criterions, I am thinking spouses are demanding some kind of written promise...We all know it's a farce...

I love it. I think it's one of Polanski's very best and one of my favorite Criterions.

At various times the last 2 weeks I have had as many as 12 titles in my cart, but decided to "sleep on it" before pulling the trigger as I have a big trip to visit my daughter in TN that I am leaving for on the 31st... I am glad I didn't fall prey to the temptation to go "stupid" and spend that much at one shot on blu's, but tonight I ran to my local B&N and grabbed A Matter of Life and Death, Diabolique, and Erasurehead. I had Lodger in my hands as well but decided to hold off... This "showing restraint thing" really does suck but oh well there will be another sale soon enough.

the current BR screams for a proper 4k restoration.
Or how ‘bout the one that won *Best Picture* yet is nevertheless inexplicably absent:

Recently watched Aparajito, the second film in the Apu Trilogy. I’ve seen a lot of people on Letterboxd praise the first one so much, but I loved the second even more. Does anyone else feel this way?

I can’t wait to complete the series. I hope it doesn’t disappoint!

I can't say that I like it more than Pather Panchali, which is a borderline top ten film for me, but Aparajito is really, really, REALLY good.

Apur Sansar might be the best in the trilogy.

...a truly remarkable conclusion.

I do like Lost in America. I haven't seen many Albert Brooks films but this one makes me laugh. The scene between him and Garry Marshall is
[Show spoiler]such illogical salesmanship but by the end of the scene it almost makes sense!
Classic! Plus, the movie makes the term "Nest Egg" funny. That's not easy to do.
