No doubt about that. The Pianist is a vastly underrated film. I find myself reaching for that film over Schindler's List far more too. Maybe its just the fact that there's a "rawness" in Polanski's film that Spielberg's film lacks. It's also the lack of melodrama that I find appealing too, as the soundtrack doesn't overpower the scenes in The Pianist (unlike in Spielberg's film).

I have seen Visitors. On the big screen no less, when it came out. It’s a shame that film has since been forgotten.

I heard it’s a good bluray. Waiting for it to go down in price.

The soundtrack for The Pianist is superb. The Chopin pieces just accompany the desolate loneliness and worry Szpilman and his family feel. It also reminds me of winter, the season that occasionally evokes the same feelings.

Then at the end you get the beautiful full orchestra piece, and its like a big middle finger to the Nazis.

I just ordered a bunch of Altman films at the Barnes sale. I was surprised The Long Goodbye hasn’t received a Criterion release. Do you think we’ll ever see one?

In my humble opinion, The Pianist is one of the true masterpieces of the new century, thus far. Adrien Brody's performance is not only magnificent, he had to beat out four previous Oscar winners (Daniel Day-Lewis, Nicolas Cage, Jack Nicholson and Michael Caine) to do it. That foursome have combined to take home nine gold statues. That's some pretty fierce competition.

Thanks. I probably should just suck it up and buy the US release. I could be waiting a long time for a Criterion release.

I saw it in the cinema - it was magnificent, but spoiled by the blue roof lights (in the UK, cinemas are not allowed total darkness because of H&S... no good for a film like this!). It looks great on BD, but imagine a 4K on an OLED telly - that would be something for those inky blacks!

I bought it in-store so I can't answer your exact question. I can tell you that everything fits nicely and "firmly" where it should, so no reason to assume anything would "break" during shipping unless intentionally abused. I'd be more worried about dings to the outer box during shipping - but even then, you can exchange if anything did happen. I say go for it!

Well, I really did it to myself this time. I watched my copy of L'Avventura last night. Sure enough, I loved it. Does this mean I have to get La Notte and L'eclisse? Or even Red Desert? What about Blow-Up?

Now I did watch Zabriskie Point a couple months ago and I did not particularly enjoy it. I'd say it's simply good, but not interested in buying more films like that.

So which, if any, should I really buy?

I was hoping I was only going to get about seven more criterions this sale, but now I might need up to ten?!

Probably not.

Anderson said back during the Spring press tour for Isle of Dogs he hadn't started working on it yet.

I hope it's Lolita since WB can't seem to be bothered to release it.

Aside from that and Eyes Wide Shut, I think most Kubrick is very well represented on Blu-ray (or will be very soon), so I honestly don't think I have any interest in additional rights going to Criterion until they get off their butts and start releasing UHD discs. I don't want to buy an interim Blu-ray and then continue waiting for a 4K release.

Hopeful a loaded release of The Shining with both cuts, a jam packed disc of supplements and a thick book of Kubrick archive material and essays.

The Shining would be a good choice for their first UHD release!
