Exactly. I heard of the film through reputation before I'd ever seen it. Not sure if it's a blind buy for me or not. That's all I was getting at.

A quick question I forgot to ask in my post above; if I reviewed say, Jurassic World, and made a tangent about how much of a "sexy hunk" I find Chris Pratt, would that be annoyingly superficial? If so, in what ways? If not, in what ways? I'm expressing myself as a gay man in my review one should also remember.

Sorry if old news but has Come and See ever had a phantom page/listing before? I was just browsing the Criterion site by spine number and did a reverse sort and obviously titles without spine numbers are listed first (namely Eclipse titles), but Come and See was listed first. I know it's on FilmStruck's Criterion site but it's never had a physical release to my knowledge. Clicking on it goes nowhere.

On a more related topic, Amazon seems to be 'out' of Criterion's Don't Look Now - is there reason to think that this has gone out of print? I've resisted picking up a copy because I've never seen the film. (It's reputation precedes it for me in that respect.) Today's the last day of the B&N sale, and it's either this or Tootsie.

I know, I know - apples and oranges...
No there is not reason to think it is going out of print. It is just low in stock at Amazon.

A title is only OOP when Criterion says so.

Criterion

My final count for this sale was 6

The Apu Trilogy
Female Trouble
Multiple Maniacs
In The Mood For Love
The Piano Teacher
The Virgin Suicides

There were a lot of them that were incredibly tempting but I went with these. Four were blind buys and I greatly enjoyed the 3 I watched. I still have to dig into The Apu Trilogy.

I tapped out at 19 Criterions this sale, most were DVD to Blu-Rays upgrades.

I was definitely addicted to buying Criterions a number of years ago but now I'm actually thinking about selling a portion of them off since I don't watch many of them. Out of 272 Criterions or something like that, I might keep 50 (of only the titles I love).

Last night I watched Hiroshima Mon Amour and I can safely say I am enraptured by Resnais' style. I watched Last Year at Marienbad a few weeks ago and was enthralled. I like the latter a bit more, but they are both excellent films for me. Both films have such a hypnotic way about them.
The rest of his films are my new priority for the next Criterion sales.

I hadn't planned my viewing to coincide with the anniversary today, but it makes it feel all the more resonant.

I had 29 at the beginning of the sale and now I have 95 so I actually bought 66 Criterions.

Never again. I'm limiting myself for the November sale.

I went way overboard this sale too. A little less than you, but compared to all sales before this was crazy.

On the other hand, with Criterion especially, there are so many titles that really feel like *must watch* for me. And there's no other feasible way (excluding chance theatre showings) I'd rather watch them than a Criterion blu. Buying so many this sale has given me a huge stack of titles I can now rest easy, so to speak. Consecutive sales will now have so many less titles screaming "TOUCH ME, BUY ME, WATCH ME."

I guess it could argued to be redundant, since most actors tend to be attractive (the leads, anyway). Hollywood and L.A. are the land of beautiful people. It doesn't typically have pertinence to the quality of a film, it's more of a subjective/personal observation by the reviewer. But yeah, it is human nature to find other people attractive. It's reductive when a great performance is overlooked for expressly that observation (or a character/performance is simplified or misjudged in a sexist way). More so, if it's a pattern with a reviewer. I wonder if women include these observations in their reviews, of course there's not nearly as large of a pool to draw from, as most film critics and indeed users on this forum are male, and men are more visual (so they say).

The DVD edition of America Lost and Found: The BBS Story is now out-of-print.

Clarification from high up on Mount Mulvaney:

I noticed the DVD version of America Lost and Found: The BBS Story is now out-of-print. Is there any chance the same will happen to blu-ray version?

Quote:

Hello CMNPlanet,

Thanks for writing. To the best of my knowledge, the Blu-ray version of THE BBS STORY box isn't going anywhere any time soon.

All best,
Jon Mulvaney

They still have been splitting DVD/BD combo packs as needed (Red River and Rififi as of late) and repressing older DVD sets (I Am Curious... and In The Mood for Love) with the 'C' branding versus the old 'line' logo.

So this looks like the first time of Criterion moving away from DVD where it's no longer cost-effective.

Thank you for the confirmation. Was seriously wondering if I'd have to pony up for it today, now I can rest easy. I will get it, but it may be awhile. I just got plenty during the sale, too. That's interesting though, that they discontinued a DVD version of something but not the Blu-ray. At least they kept the superior format version in-print.

I have a color deficiency -- can't remember the name of it, unfortunately -- so I am a terrible judge of how a film looks, especially from a color point of view. I'm the last person who can really make an informed opinion on the subject.
