The 30th anniversary of Do The Right Thing is coming up next year so maybe Criterion will upgrade it with a new restoration.

There’s supposedly a 4K restoration of She’s Gotta Have It in the works, and since Criterion did it on LD, I’d say they’re the likeliest culprits.

It may just be for a Filmstruck program because TT released a blu-ray a few years ago.

I wonder why Jungle fever is being ignored on blu-ray and no one seems to ask for it. Its one of Spikes better films with a great cast

Today I did a double feature of The Breaking Point and To have and Have Not. I had never seen Point before and I was absolutely blown away by it. The last 15 minutes were some of the most suspenseful I have ever witness. Garfield’s performance was incredible. This is a film that is going to get watched a lot from here on out. Now, Have and Have Not is pretty great, but now, I feel like Point bests it in every way. Bogart and Bacall are very good, but I’ve always felt they were better in their other films. I especially love Dark Passage. Only real issue I have with the film is the ending.
[Show spoiler]Mainly because, well, it just sort of ends. I’ve never cared for it. But, I can see how it works.
I’ll watch it again down the line, but for now, The Breaking Point is my preferred version of the story and could very well become one of my favorite movies after a few more viewings. One of the best, if not the best, blind buy from Criterion I’ve ever made. Oh, and the cover art to the disc is pretty awesome now that I’ve seen the film. Before I didn’t think much of it, but that show was one of the best in the film and perfectly captured it all.

Watched A Face in the Crowd for the first time today and it is instantly Top 5 Kazan for me, has there been any rumors of this coming to the collection? It's a Warner title and I'd say it easily fits the bill.

It's absolutely one of my five favorite films. It was remade (or the novel was adapted again, however you want to play it) in the early 90s into Intersection starring Richard Gere and Sharon Stone - although nowhere near as good as this.

I'm hoping Criterion is actually able to release a few Sautet films like this one and Max and the Junkmen.
Those were both Studio Canal titles, so not likely to make it to Criterion. Not that I disagree with your sentiment, I liked them as well. And they were pretty good quality transfers streaming-wise, unlike Le Train which had a really crappy looking transfer, but also was pretty great in my opinion, and sadly also Studio Canal. (Frustrating but at least I got the chance to see them. Maybe someday they'll make it to English-friendly blu-ray.)

(Edit: After a bit, realized maybe Le Train wasn't a Sautet title, and sure enough... Romy though, so.)

Actually, in the Kino thread, it has been brought up, given that Kino's got a new deal with Universal and mentioned that they did have some Spike Lee titles.

This and Klute are rumoured to be with them, only ones from a list of Warner titles that went OOP at the same time that are not out yet (The Magnificent Ambersond being the most recently crossed off from that list).

If they don't have the rights to these two great Sautet movies, the least they could do is finally upgrade Classe Tous Risques.

Will there be a November announcement or is November just going to be the Bergman set? Also if there will be an announcement does anyone know when?

Their announcements are on the 15th of the month. Sometimes it’s delayed, and if it falls on a weekend, the announcements are the following Monday.

I believe A Face in the Crowd is actually no longer with Warner. I don't recall who has the rights now, though.

Klute should still be coming though at some point.

I watched Certified Copy for the first time and really liked it.

The picture it reminded me of the most was Before Midnight.

Juliette Binoche is so breathtakingly beautiful, it hurts to know that she will never be mine. She’s a really great actress as well.

One thing that confused me though was the supposed mystery over whether
[Show spoiler]they’re actually a real couple or just pretending to be a real couple. Is that really even a question? Could two people who just met have those kinds of emotionally-charged conversations/arguments? Nobody could be that good at playacting with someone they just met.

For me personally, the answer was blatantly obvious.

I think the picture would’ve been even better if it had been more ambiguous.

...still very satisfied that I blind bought it.

I can’t see why it wouldn’t still be owned by Warner. Is there a reason why you think someone else owns it?

A Face in the Crowd is still with Warner, but I believe any time it's released it also has to be approved by the Kazan estate.

It's with Warner. There DVD is just OOP. Warner would be the one who licenses it to Criterion.

This is why I said that.

But, the issue may be what another commenter mentioned in that the Kazan estate has to sign off on anything. Could have just been confusion on their part.

Sorry for the misinformation.

I saw its influence on two recent films:
Winter Sleep (2014). I thought the conversation in the car between Isak and Marianne in the beginning of the film was very reminiscent of the dialogue and attitudes of the male/female characters.

First Reformed (2018). I know Bresson has been cited as a huge influence on this film, but I saw Evald's attitude very reminiscent of a certain character in First Reformed. Won't say much more on that since it's still a very new movie.

I think my favourite line in the movie was when the two kids come back to the car from fighting and Sara says, "Well, does god exist?"
Interesting, I'll keep that in mind when I watch Wild Strawberries again, which should be soon. The Bergman movie that came to my mind while watching First Reformed was
[Show spoiler]Winter Light
, which as it turns out actually was an influence according to Paul Schrader. There's a key relationship between two characters, defined by two major scenes, that is a pretty direct echo, though dealing with different subject matter. Actually, there's a major female character involved in both films too, in different ways. He was also apparently inspired by Diary of a Country Priest, which from the title alone makes sense. I really wanna see that film now. Criterion has been pretty decently paced, for them, in getting four of his films out on Blu-ray in the past five years, so maybe that will continue and it'll come within the next couple years.
