Juliette Binoche is so breathtakingly beautiful, it hurts to know that she will never be mine. She’s a really great actress as well.

One thing that confused me though was the supposed mystery over whether

I think this is not what it was
[Show spoiler]playacting with someone they just met.

I think
[Show spoiler]they had serious past relationship but not sure whether they really went through the scenarios they discussed.

I knew you will like it...I am glad you liked it...

Like Someone in Love is a really sweet movie, not as challenging/layered as Certified Copy but I like it very much...

Hi all, I took a trip to Paris with the family last week. Stopped in at Cimetiere de Montmartre to pay respects at a couple of graves. Thought you would find them interesting, being Film fans. I brought my Criterion booklets along for the picture. (If this is not appropriate please let me know and I will delete)

, which as it turns out actually was an influence according to Paul Schrader. There's a key relationship between two characters, defined by two major scenes, that is a pretty direct echo, though dealing with different subject matter. Actually, there's a major female character involved in both films too, in different ways. He was also apparently inspired by Diary of a Country Priest, which from the title alone makes sense. I really wanna see that film now. Criterion has been pretty decently paced, for them, in getting four of his films out on Blu-ray in the past five years, so maybe that will continue and it'll come within the next couple years.
I watched Winter Ligh many years ago, at least five. That was before I could really appreciate it though. Now I'm waiting for the Bergman boxset to dig in again. Thinking back to what I do remember, the influences make sense.

I bought all the Bresson Criterions this last sale and have watched three of the four so far. Would really love to see Diary get a release soon too. I hope you're right.

I watched Winter Light about four years ago. I wasn't crazy about it, but then I rewatched the scene where Max von Sydow sees Gunnar Björnstrand and later
[Show spoiler]is found dead by him.
I had to write about a scene from it for a Bergman class (which is where I saw my first of his films and a bunch of others, and fell in love with him as a filmmaker). I had fun looking for symbolism and "reading" the scene (i.e. von Sydow's head framed in front of prison bars, to show his trapped/hopeless emotional state), but I also gained an appreciation for the film as a whole, and really want to see it again. Been waiting for a Blu-ray upgrade of the trilogy ever since. The same thing happened to me with Wild Strawberries, but I also had certain expectations for that one going into it. I'm also excited to reevaluate Persona. I loved specific scenes (i.e Bibi Andersson's monologue about the boys on the beach, if I have that right), but now I'm sure I'll love it from beginning to end. At that time, I was more resistant to films that I didn't fully understand. But I realize now that you don't have to for a film to be amazing. As for connections to First Reformed:
[Show spoiler]as soon as Ethan Hawke finds the young man has killed himself in the woods, I immediately thought of Winter Light. The conversation between the two earlier is likely also a parallel. The protagonist also has a relationship with a woman in each, though they are very different.

That's awesome! I'm holding out for a Blu-ray-only Pickpocket, but I grabbed the rest this sale too. Need to dive into those soon. I've only seen one so far, via TCM a few months back. I worry that Diary and Mouchette may be the only ones left that Criterion intend to release on Blu. I hope they get the rest and put them out some way, even in a box set. I saw a clip from Four Nights of a Dreamer and was mesmerized.

I was assuming the Bergman Trilogy Blu-ray set was going to come in November. Sure there's already the huge box set releasing that month, but that's outside of the normal releasing schedule and may not even have a spine number. They may still release it later on, though, cause there's already been a lot of Bergman this year with Virgin Spring and Scenes from a Marriage as well, but then again it's a big year for the director with the centennial theatrical tour of his films. Wondering what others are thinking, as I've seen no one predicting it for the announcement.

Also, is there anything preventing Criterion from releasing more Buñuel? There's a lot yet to be released (in the U.S. at least), and he's one of the greats.

StudioCanal has the rights to many of them, and Lionsgate isn’t really in any hurry to put more stuff out.

I remember last year when criterion announced their Olympics box set that month's announcements had only one other "announcement" that being Election.

With Ingmar Bergman set coming up. Is the same thing going to happen this time?

I'd assume we"ll get a full slate for November. December will probably be a light month like usual.

Hey Ray! Always enjoy your posts. And glad to see someone's talking about Certified Copy. I think it's a great film (and yeah, I just watched it for the 3rd time so I could remember stuff). I do think it's probably more ambiguous than you first suspect. Or possibly the other meaning entirely.
SPOILERS BELOW.
In my opinion, I absolutely think
[Show spoiler]they're not married and have never met before. If you watch it one more time, you might agree with me. I think the key to the movie is the beginning. The son does not speak about the man as if that's his father, even though the couple later pretend to have parental squabbles about the son. In the beginning, the son refers to the writer as "That guy", his translator as "That other guy", and tells his mom: "I know you like this James and want to fall in love with him". Never once does he call him Dad, nor show any sign that he's ever met the guy.
So then what's up with the 2nd half of the movie? Like you said, how are they so good at playacting? It's actually handled fairly naturally. Before the cafe scene, they're just arguing about art and life, as any two strangers might in a Woody Allen movie (or, as you said, a Linklater movie). It's not until the cafe owner mistakes them as husband and wife that Binoche ever starts referring to them as such (and she stumbles at first....when the lady asks how long they've been married, her answer is "uhhhhh, 15 years"). But she latches on to the idea and uses it as a means to complain about (presumably) her ex-husband. Whoever she was married to, it obviously didn't go well. He's nowhere to be seen and she states that she was "not well" a few years back. So she airs out her complaints to the cafe owner -- including that her husband doesn't speak Italian or French (which turns out to be wrong -- we see the writer, in just a few minutes, speaking French quite well to her). But Binoche is doing this, substituting William in as her husband, because here's her chance to make an instant copy of her marriage (or a marriage in general), in the hopes that the copy will be better than the original. When she tells William that she's now represented themselves as a couple of 15 years, he goes along with it because he's an intellectual that's built a career speculating about these kinds of identities, although he sometimes struggles to keep up (one of his first lines when the game starts is "what do you want me to say next?").
The interesting thing is that they're both astute enough to know that IF they were a married couple of 15 years, it probably wouldn't be like a charming lovable first date. It would be a day of tension, of passive-aggressiveness. He'd complain about the wine, and not want to take photographs with strangers, and she'd try to sentimentalize their early days and get mad at him when he wasn't receptive. Which is exactly what we see play out. But they're also taught by older married couples (the ones by the fountain, and the old people at the church) -- that it's not always like that. The writer is told to put his arm around her, be close to her, that's all she's looking for...which is what Binoche asks of him at the end.
So then what does the movie mean? I think it's a movie about finding love, no matter how you find it, and appreciating it, whether it's an original or a copy. In the car, they talk about Binoche's sister and her husband as having found the secret of life. And it is her sister who (as a fan of costume jewelry and gas fireplaces) says: "A good copy is better than the original". So Binoche and the writer are two people who, by the end, are giving themselves a chance to make a copy of a relationship: to not start with a first date, to not fall in love, to not have a wedding (like they keep seeing throughout the film -- there are various weddings). They're giving themselves the opportunity to skip over all of that and have a 15 year old marriage without having lived any of it -- to see if it has value. The end shot I think is really meaningful. The writer is looking at himself in the mirror, presumably thinking "I can walk out of this hotel and never talk to her again. Or I can embrace this copy of a marriage and grow old with her". The movie is constantly hypothesizing that a copy can even be better than an original. One of the writer's lines in his lecture is: "Forget the original, just get a good copy." Originals are bullshit anyway, he's always saying. Even an original painting is just a reproduction of the human subject anyway. The only true originals are humans themselves...and even though it's a weird scenario, maybe he's found a true original for himself.
