Good news. Costa-Gavras' Z has gone OOP on Criterion's website. It is a Janus title with a restoration a few years back, so this pretty much guarantees its blu-ray upgrade announcement is forthcoming. It is the same thing that happened to Andrei Rublev earlier this year before its blu-ray upgrade announcement as well. It going OOP just means they have exhausted their stock of the old DVD and will not bother printing more until the announcement.

I guarantee re-sellers will try to gouge the unsuspecting. Do not panic buy.
Not necessarily.

The Confession went out of print a month or so ago. It's possible they've lost the home video rights to his catalogue of films.

It's a personal view. Heck, some people don't like Star Wars because it seems unrealistic. To each their own.

With that said, I will add that I'm testing for my 2nd Degree black belt in Goju Ryu Karate in November, so I do have some insight. There's a reason why people are organized by gender and weight class in professional fights.

Yes, professionals are grouped by gender and weight class. Absolutely, as they should be. But to look at the average person on the street and assume they are incapable of rendering a threat inert because they are diminutive in stature is not wise. You know that there are strikes that can be devastating, and they don't require a hell of a lot of power to be effective. An open palm strike to the face, ridge hand technique, a well-placed kick to the knee, hell, a 100 pound person that knows how to effectively employ chin na (joint locks) can take somebody twice their size down. The first time my friend showed me a finger lock-"point your finger in my chest"-I was down on the ground in a microsecond.

Good luck with your test!

No. Z is with Janus right now. It has theatrical dates scheduled at repetory theaters later this year through Janus.

The issue with The Confession was the production company. The company has recently had some of the rights to titles it produced bought up by StudioCanal. It is why State of Siege is safe as well even though it came from the same licensor as The Confession as it did not have the same production company.

There is a less than zero chance they lost the rights ro Z because the situation is totally different. Costa-Gavras' films are all with different companies and licensors so they literally cannot lose an entire catalog

It is not troubling. Z is currently with Janus. There is no way for it to be safer.

I agree. Below is the response from Criterion I posted when The Confession went out of print. Excellent news about Z. Great film.

Criterion on the possibility of losing rights to other Costa-Gavras titles, namely State of Siege:

I hope this finds you well. We've only lost the rights (unfortunately!) to THE CONFESSION, the other Costa-Gavras titles should be fine. It's available on our website here: https://www.criterion.com/films/28048-state-of-siege

All best,

Thanks. And I agree fully with what you just said. Again, I just didn't find Meiko Kaji believable in the role of Lady Snowblood. But other female actors, such as Angelina Jolie, have been very believable in similar physical roles.

Of course, now I feel that I need to rewatch Lady Snowblood. Maybe I'll feel differently after watching it a second time.

Reposting from earlier in the thread, Z is still with Janus, as it still has theatrical showings from them booked throughout the rest of the year. Its OOP status on the Criterion site is likely a harbinger of an upgrade than them losing the title. Good thing too, I know it was restored not too long ago, and I've held off buying the DVD in hopes of an upgrade.

Note I only brought her up because her screen presence exudes bad ass. She acted for a very short period in mostly just exploitation films. Granted Japanese exploitation films from that period make America's exploitation films in the 70's look like Walt Disney Films.

One of her more popular films was Sex and Fury. But be warned you better not have issues with her fighting naked with a sword or being tied up. There's a lot of that in those films in general and especially in the one mentioned.

She had a lot of early hits in explotation films with The popular Girl Boss Blues series. I think she may have also been in a few Stray Cat Rock films.

She is in one of my favorite films that I really wish Criterion would release. Bohachi Bushido: Code of the Forgotten Eight. It is a very fun exploitation film. Tetsuro Tanba is always a blast to watch (really the guy is a legend having over 320 film credits to his name. Here's just a few films he was in = Three Outlaw Samurai , Goyokin , Harakiri , Kwaidan) and this movie really is a film that transcends exploitation IMO.

Not to say Reiko Ike only did exploitation eventhough that was her claim to fame. She was in a few tasteful and professional productions mostly by the great Kinji Fukasakyu. She's in both Battles Without Honour and Humanity & New Battles Without Honor and Humanity . Off subject if you have never seen Battles Without Honour and Humanity do yourself a favor and give them a watch.

Sadly Reiko Iko retired from acting very early in her career. 79 was her last feature film and other then a short stint in a TV series in 80 she disappeared from the scene at the age of 26. Which is probably why she is not more well known.

At the start of the 60's studio budgets & profits dropped and roman porno films and Pinky Violence films became the only way studio's could pull Japanese audiences away from their TV sets. For instance Nikkatsu by 70 had dropped the majority of their gangster film output and focused on Roman Porno. Why Toei was focused on Pinky Violence. Really there isn't that much a difference between the two, but as the 70's moved on they became more and more raunchy likely adding to Reiko's decision to stop acting. By the 80's VHS had become popular and replaced the need to go to a theater to see nudity and over the top violence. The major Studio's output of these films were next to zero by the end of that decade. Only now has there been a resurgence and reboot of Roman Porno in the last few years. Which has actually become really popular in Japan. I know I saw AntiPorno on Bluray recently and really it's a huge difference artistic wise then those films from that era.

Thank you so much for such a comprehensive reply. I have been interested in Japanese television and movies since the early 90's and am always looking to expand my viewing so I will be sure to check out the titles you listed. Once again my thanks for all the information.

It's getting at least a limited physical release for those who contributed to the BD/DVD option on the Kickstarter campaign. Whether they do an additional sell-through release after that is unknown, but I would say it's more likely than most Netflix films. It's kind of a similar situation to what happened for MST3K: The Return.

I haven’t seen Lady Snowbird yet, so I can’t comment on her performance or believability. A re-watch could help. Maybe it’s a combination of things-size, disposition, and coordination, which I believe you mentioned.

Oh, and Angelina Jolie can kick my ass anytime she likes!

Every now and then, my mind wanders back to this image as a predictor of things to come in the bottom right. I can see the recently announced Shampoo and the soon to be officially announced Polyester in there. Anyone else see anything of significance in there?

Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice and This is Spinal Tap are next to Shampoo, and two DVDs of Bringing Up Baby are on the shelf Shampoo’s on.
