It would make a nice double feature with Bresson's Lancelot du Lac. Plus your ears would be ringing for days from all the clanging of armor.

Spader's an awesome actor and so is Hutton. The true test of an actor is giving a great performance in a terrible film. Hutton in "Playing God" passes this litmus test. "Playing God" is a horrible film, but Hutton is amazing in it. I've never seen Spader give a bad performance, dude is a great actor.

Why can’t The Shining get the Criterion treatment?

I know it’s a Warner Brothers title, but so is Barry Lyndon.

Criterion needs to do more horror films imo.

I’m going to email Mulvaney about this.

He and I haven’t been on speaking terms since I sent him a nude photograph of me holding Badlands between my legs.

But he knows what I’m capable of.

...he knows.

Maybe you shouldn’t have picked Badlands? I think that would imply not great stuff. Days of Heaven maybe would’ve been prefereable?

“The Shining” is a much more popular “evergreen” title for WB than “Barry Lyndon”. I wouldn’t be shocked if WB planned an UHD next year.

I couldn't help but think of For All Mankind while watching parts of this film. Great Criterion title if anyone has seen it. Also, for those conspiracy theorists who don't believe humans landed on the moon, they should aim a high powered telescope at the Sea of Tranquility base to see the one of 6 remaining flags (not waving) there... either that or watch For All Mankind.

I think 2020 is more likely. Not only is 2020 the 40th anniversary of the movie’s release but the Doctor Sleep movie is expected that year as well.

TBH, I’d rather get the UHD from Warner than a regular Blu-ray release from Criterion. Going further, I hope it’s not long until we get the entire Kubrick filmography in UHD and, unfortunately, that’s not going to happen with Criterion.

Since The Shining had multiple cuts and aspect ratios, I could see Criterion doing a great release of this one, though something tells me Clockwork orange will probably happen sooner since it already has a 4k transfer.

The Shining was composed for 1.85:1 so there’s only one aspect ratio.

But it would be nice to get both cuts of the films.

You guys are doing it wrong. If you have to pick a Criterion to stick between your legs the choice is Mister Johnson.

Trying to finalize my flash sale list. The past two years I try to buy an eclipse set for the cirterion.com sale since Barnes & Noble doesn't sell the old ones anymore, at least around here. For this one, I'm debating between two: Nikkatsu Noir or Leningrad Cowboys. Thoughts on either? I could maybe do both, we'll see.

The two films I've watched on Nikkatsu Noir, Cruel Gun Story, and A Colt is My Passport are very good Japanese crime dramas. Also, both have the great Jo Shishido

There are more than 3 cuts of the film out there, I count 4 if we ignore TV edits. I assume, though, that you are referring to the 146min cut the movie premiered in but since it wasn’t approved by Kubrick for wide release I don’t think it would be appropriate to release it. But it would be cool if that cut scene was included as an extra.

Also, the cut that emerged in auction a few months ago, for which we only have a vague description, has an extra scene that would be cool as an extra.

Not holding my breath for either though.
