If 2001 can ship 3 weeks early, certainly no reason this one won't ship around the previously arranged time. For those that were planning a trip to BN to pick it up in person hopefully they will note the shift.

I, like I'm sure many others here, go through certain "kicks", be it a theme, genre, director, actor, etc.

After revisiting Champion from Olive and Ace in the Hole from Criterion via recent sales, I'm currently on my Kirk Douglas kick.

I think when discussing classic actors Douglas tends to get overlooked next to some of his peers. But, man...that roughly 20-year stretch he had from the 40s through the 50s is stupefying. Not only did he do it all (film noir, western, drama, biopic, fantasy, comedy), but he worked with many of the era's top directors and was fearless when it came to playing total sons-of-bi+ch3s.

The guy is going on 102, and while controversy will always follow him regarding the Natalie Wood scandal, he's one of the precious few relics of Hollywood's Golden Age and is a true legend.

Criterion has gone to bat for Kirk with Ace in the Hole and Kubrick's masterful anti-war drama Paths of Glory, but there are still some vintage Kirk movies in dire need of HD resuscitation. The Big Sky, Hawks' frontier western, has been near the top of my Criterion wishlist for the better part of a decade. Wyler's Detective Story and Minelli's The Bad and the Beautiful are still collecting 480-dust. And The Strange Love of Martha Ivers, Kirk's debut, is curiously absent as well. Would love to see more Kirk in the CC.

The Strange Love of Martha Ivers is on blu-ray from Film Chest but the reviews of the PQ are not good.

You've got some essentials already I see. If you can manage them, I think these are also must-haves: Seven Samurai, On the Waterfront, The Passion of Joan of Arc, Bicycle Thieves, Harakiri, Brazil, Silence of the Lambs,

Since you have a good number of action and comedy movies, I figure you might enjoy Hopscotch, which is a pretty lightweight, tongue-in-cheek spy caper of sorts. The Wes Anderson films are cute--maybe too cute at times, so I'd recommend renting most of them. The Fantastic Mr. Fox and The Life Aquatic would be easier recommendations since there's more action to those. The Breakfast Club is a must, and you usually can't go wrong with all the Charlie Chaplin or Harry Lloyd films. Also, Eating Raoul is an underrated gem with some serious bite to it.

Since you have a few of the more surreal Criterions (like Naked Lunch and Being John Malkovich), Videodrome, Scanners, Eraserhead, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas are real doozies too. And maybe 1977's House--that movie's crazy.

If you're looking for more thrillers, all the Hitchcocks and DePalma films are easy recommendations. Other good ones would be Night of the Hunter, Diabolique, High and Low, Thee Manchurian Candidate, and The Wages of Fear.

If you're looking for more crime movies, Le Samourai and Rififi are pretty cool.

Horror looks like your main shtick. A lot of the Criterion horror titles do nothing for me personally, but the Del Toro films are favorites of mine (The Devil's Backbone, Cronos), and The Phantom Carriage is a superb story. Vampyr and Haxan deserve a look too.
Thank you so much for your post!

I don't think I've ever seen Kirk Douglas do comedy -- I mean, I've seen him be funny, but not in a comedy. Any specific recommendations on that front?

Watched the Kino release of Joan of Arc today. Really love movie. It’s made Me want to watch more Ingrid. Never seen the Bergman/Rossellini films. How are they? Worth a blind buy? Also interested in the Eclipse Bergman collection. Anyone seen the discs yet? Good quality. Definitely also need to get the In Her Own Words doc. Thoughts?

I would love to see a Criterion release of Gunfight at the OK Corral with a ton of extras. Kirk Douglas's Doc Holiday was my favorite until Tombstone came along....

And it seems to me if Criterion can release Salo and John Waters movies, they can release Last Tango In Paris.

Rocky, if you want to boycott a movie, boycott Tiny Furniture....

I mostly agree, though I do believe the dubious consent of Last Tango is the main issue. I can understand that one more than people objecting the concept of releases of Annie Hall or Chinatown because the directors are admittedly scuzzy people, or Sixteen Candles because of a joke that aged poorly.

Not an outright "comedy", per se, but his scenes in A Letter to Three Wives (which is part romantic comedy) and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea were very lighthearted and comedic in nature.

Douglas was often known for his "go-for-broke" dramatic performances and outright heels, but he certainly demonstrated a facility for comedy.

I hope I'm not the only one waiting for A Story from Chikamatsu to come out, and wondering why we haven't seen a review since the release date is this Tuesday. I thought I would take a glance on Criterion's site only to see this message: 'On backorder, available Dec 2, 2018'

I'm sure this hasn't sold out before release, it would be the 1st time, so assuming it's been delayed.

I think it depends on how much you love Italian neorealism/European modern cinema, not how much you love Bergman. Not that I'm saying Bergman isn't great in her collaborations with Rossellini but if you're expecting plot-driven dramatic films like Joan of Arc or Casablanca, you might be baffled or even disappointed.

Is this a hard watch (torture, violence, abuse)? I don't want to upset other folks who might be watching with me
