Toho can't make another film until Hollywood finishes their plan.

Ace in the Hole was also originally a Dual-Format release.

I watched Come and See this weekend. Had to make sure I caught it before filmstruck went away. Wow. Few films have f'd me up like that. I really hope a blu comes in the near future. The streaming quality from filmstruck was not so good for me. This film deserves everything.

I'm a huge James Mason fan, and yet I never hear anybody talk about Bigger Than Life.

Anybody care to spare a comment or two on it? Where does it fall on Ray's resume, and how is Mason in it?

Oops. I only factored in the new spines, not the upgrades.

List should be fixed now. Thanks!

The script is a little clunky, more than a little unsubtle—though given the opioid epidemic, still frighteningly pertinent—and the supporting actors have a little trouble keeping pace with Mason, but it's an excellent turn by Mason and strong, if not Great, Ray. Definitely recommended if you're a fan of both/either.

Have you seen any other Ray?

Thanks for the comments.

Yeah, I'm a Ray fan...love In a Lonely Place and Johnny Guitar, really like They Live by Night and On Dangerous Ground, like Rebel Without a Cause, loathe The Savage Innocents.

I haven't upgraded by B&N membership and figured I'd largely skip this sale, but as an avid Criterion collector the thought of that is almost unconscionable. Bigger Than Life is a title that I'd throw in the pile if I decide to splurge this next week.

Cheers

Quick thoughts:

I like it very much - although I'm not familiar with much of Ray's work so can't say where it falls in the spectrum.

Mason is superb, and his descent into psychosis is quite intense - if perhaps a little too melodramatic.

The transfer is very strong, and the film looks great in 2.55:1 CinemaScope.

I wouldn't recommend it as someone's first Ray, but it'd definitely worth checking out if you're already a Ray fan as well.

Are you saying this as fact, or just it’s what you want? Toho has plans to do another. They did Shin Godzilla in an off year from Legendary.

Nice art. Maybe they'll release the remastered version that was done a few years ago.

I’m glad they were able to get some of the Canal OOPs back, but it’s a shame they weren’t able to do them all.

Or... maybe they are working on a Kurosawa box set of all his films on BR... similar to the awesome Bergman one.

Good news on Ran. Always felt odd that this was one they lost the rights to.

Now, hopefully we get Drunken Angel and the Bad Sleep Well at some point.
