ECLIPSE SERIES 14 - Rosselinie's History Films - Renaissance and Enlightment
ECLIPSE SERIES 17 - Nikkatsu Noir

CRITERION COLLECTION TITLES, I haven't yet purchased but considered:

- Yi Yi
- Ivan's Childhood
- Stranger than Paradise
- Night on Earth
- Sawdust and Tinsel
- Patriotism
- The Shop on Mainstreet
- The Firemen's Ball
- The Lovers
- Blast of Silence
- La Bete Humaine
- The Browning Version

I've been trying to get "A Story of Floating Weeds/Floating Weeds" from this sale and still doesn't show on B&N as available.
I'd say Yiyi and Blast of Silence are my two faves from that list.

I'll bite, I've seen a few of these.

Patriotism is excellent. Albeit short. 30 minutes, give or take. Highly recommend. Criterion put together a great package for this.

Shop On Main Street is quite good, as I recall. If you like ww2 occupation films, should be worthwhile to check out.

Firemen's Ball. It's pretty good, the synopsis on Criterion's website gives a pretty good idea of what it's about. Not sure if it's really a key title, but it is Forman.

The Browning Version. Again refer you to Criterion's website synopsis of whether it's the kind of film you might like. If it is, then you would probably like it, as it's really well done.

Floating Weeds is worthwhile, although it and a couple of other titles do seem to be hard to come by from time to time (Late Spring comes to mind). Perhaps there is some push to redo the Ozus for blu, but that's just a wag on my part. One would think they're going to do something before too long.

Not yet....because I have always felt "Elevator to the Gallows" would be released on Blu-ray, so I held off. To tell you the truth, I would never have expected the Sam Fuller Blu-ray releases of those titles but hopefully we will see Criterion release EttG.

I want the Nikkatsu Noir but it's not a priority yet. I'm more into Ozu/Naruse/Hiroshi Shimizu films but I'll probably pick it up soon or next sale. "Sawdust and Tinsel" I know I want to watch, alongside "The Magician" but I figured for the price of those two, I can finally pick up the Bergman Eclipse that I have been wanting.

BTW off-topic, for those who love how Criterion has done restoration...there is one upcoming release I just have to plug right now and it's for "The Sound of Music: 45th Anniversary Edition". For restoration/remastering fans, 20th Century Fox literally went all out for this release and even did a whole special feature on how in 2005 (for the film's 40th anniversary) they couldn't do a restoration from the original damaged negative but in 2010 (for the 45th anniversary), they now have the technology that can work from the original damaged negative and how they discovered so much detail in the film never seen before. Since they have this new technology, it makes me wonder how older classics they have in their catalog will look in the near future on Blu-ray. Anyway, I won't discuss any further...but since we love Criterion for its restoration work, I just had to plug what Fox has been able to come up in terms of digital restoration for this new release.

I'm guessing he meant it's because it is a 15 1/2 hour TV mini-series from 1980. Although, if Criterion does release TV mini-series on Blu-ray (hint hint to Criterion: Decalogue/Dekalog which is quite short) that would be fantastic! Or even the 9 1/2 hr. documentary "Shoah" (the Masters of Cinema box set is fantastic btw), that would be wonderful.

That's a bit presumptuous of you. It already got an HD scan and digital restoration a few years ago, I would expect it to turn up sooner or later (most likely later.) Though I would probably not buy a Criterion release but hope for a UK release from Second Sight at the correct speed.

For Me:

Seven Samurai
Charade
Breathless
Stagecoach
Red Desert
The Magician
Paths of Glory
Night of the Hunter
Modern Times
(Yojimbo and Sanjuro box set question: Is the only thing different with buying the box set is there is the carboard box that contains the two seperate releases and its $10 cheaper?)

For regular DVD:
Do the Right Thing
Gate of Flesh
The Human Condition
Throne of Blood

Wow...this is looking more expensive then I was anticipating

For the sale, I will be getting:

Seven Samurai
The Thin Red Line
Young Mr. Lincoln
Days of Heaven

And maybe "Kagemusha". And probably "Paths of Glory" and "Modern Times" when they're released.

Dayum, how great would a Criterion Blu for this be? Any idea if that could happen or do the rights belong somewhere else?

It would be incredible but I don't think I own any E1 releases....hmm....How are their releases?

Especially since they did acquire La Dolce Vitta, they also got the rights for Vittorio De Sica's "Shoe-Shine" (1946), Luchino Visconti: "Bellissima" (1951), "La Terra Trema" (1948), and "Ossessione" (1943), definitely catches my attention.

That's correct. Get both. I personally enjoyed Yojimbo more.

Very Strange...

Went on the B&N Site to researve my titles in Store, and in every single case(like 5 Different Films ranging fro Seven Samurai on Blu to Young Mr Lincon on DVD) it says they are in stock... Then I click to researve, and the pop up says "We're Sorry, We've Confirmed that the item is no longer in stock at that store".

How is that possible on every single title, in two Different Stores?

Not possible.

Very Strange.

EDIT:

Just tried again with any Criterion title I could think of, and several different stores... All comes up the same. In Stock. Then I click to researve, and pop is says The Store No Longer has it in stock.

So I'm guess it's to do with the Sale... And that are actually still in store.
