Hopeful to make my sale purchase today of:

EIGHT HOURS DON'T MAKE A DAY
THE PRINCESS BRIDE
TRUE STORIES
MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS
CHIKAMATSU
SOME LIKE IT HOT

May grab the BALLAD OF A SOLDIER DVD, which I would like to see and can't see an upgrade in the near enough future.

I am hoping they will upgrade Ballad of a Soldier and Cranes are Flying at the same time with a bunch of new extras.

If they didn't spine the Bergman set...not sure they'd spine an AK set. That would mess with my OCD more than the Bergman set did when it included all of the single disc sets I own and now have to remove from my shelves.

Damn you, Criterion! DAMN YOU!!!

What are the chances of a complete Kurosawa set? As far as I know, the only two Kurosawa films they don't have the rights to are A Quiet Duel and Rhapsody in August? I'd be pretty happy with a set even if its missing these two films.

Before this discussion gets too far out of hand (which I believe it already has), how do we KNOW that Criterion has re-obtained the rights to Ran and other Kurosawa titles they lost to SC? Are we 100% certain? Has Criterion released a statement to that affect somewhere? Or are we just assuming they have due to a picture they posted on Twitter? They have posted many references to movies on Twitter and Instagram before in the past that they don't have the right to.

Kino Lorber announced they had gotten the rights to 130 StudioCanal titles. They said two other labels had made similar, but smaller deals with StudioCanal. Everyone, naturally, assumed one of them to be Criterion and this Janus tweet seems to only further hint that they may have Ran. Earlier this year, they also tweeted a poster from Nights of Cabiria.

Of course, Janus may just be tweeting things without purpose. Kino has already announced they are releasing at least two OOP Criterion-StudioCanal titles (Le Doulos and either Bob le Flambeur or The Fallen Idol), so it is entirely possible Criterion does not have a deal with StudioCanal as was previously assumed. IMO, if Criterion had a deal, they would've snapped up every former title they had first but it is possible they did not.

In other words, nobody knows. There's "evidence" both in favor and against.

So it sounds like it is all conjecture on our part, since Criterion has not announced anything officially. Dream on folks... dream on. Let's see... how many angels can dance on the head of a pin?

Conjecture, but it's logical conjecture. I think it's a safe bet that Criterion picked this up.

So the Japanese 4K remastered edition is slightly superior

So how many of you bought Criterions during this 50% off sale? I might go to B&N later today and buy a few more before it ends. So far I've only purchased 1 title during the sale.

I'll get the poll started. I bought 1.

Tag, you're it.

Zero so far, but I plan to buy three before the sale ends. I haven't decided if I'll be able to get to a store if I'll have to do mail-order.

I hope I'm done @ 17 - at least double my usual sale splurge. Didn't buy that much on Black Friday/Cyber Monday, so I kept filling in some holes that have been needing attention:

My Man Godfrey, The Princess Bride, Sisters, The Tree of Life, Vivre sa vie, Night and the City, Kuroneko, The Gold Rush, Phoenix, Andrei Rublev, Something Wild (1986), Smithereens, Some Like It Hot, White Material, Rififi, A Poem Is a Naked Person, Cassavetes Five Films
