Stayed somewhat limited -- other than the Bergman set -- during the B&N sale:

Bergman set

Y Tu Mama Tambien

A Matter of Life and Death

Good Morning

All three of those individual films are blind buys for me. But I believe completely in Cuaron, P&P, and of course Ozu. Plus, I find blind buys exhilarating.

I bought thirty spines in the July sale; I think I had a total of forty-eight films during that sale; but this time I could only afford one so I grabbed A Story from Chikamatsu. If there's a Mizoguchi film in a month that always comes first with me. Love him as my avatar shows. I'm getting The Magnificent Ambersons for Christmas so I'll get a late two from the sale.

As Criterion have put a couple of John Waters' films on blu, does anyone know if they have plans for PINK FLAMINGOS?

Last I heard, that one will be released by Warner Archives. I forget where that info came from though, but it sounded legit.

The next Waters movie from Criterion is speculated to be Polyester.

I’m pretty sure it came from Waters himself!

Does that make any sense lol..? XD
No, because that’s not how HDR works, or even what it’s for.

It seems like The Breakfast Club by CC is exactly identical to the 30th anniversary edition. Same transfer but lower bitrate. Correct?

Can you not research anything yourself? Seriously, it's getting rather old.

How hard is it to type in "DVD Beaver Breakfast Club" on Google, or "Criterion 4K" in the "search this thread" field?

Speaking of movies I love, I recorded Charade when TCM was showing it earlier today, just to hear what interesting tidbits Ben Mankiewicz might impart on the viewer before and after it’s shown. Now, of course, I have to watch it again. I can’t hear that Henry Mancini theme, and not get sucked into watching it, even though I own the Criterion blu. It’s one of those films that just beckons to me like a beautiful woman. I’m absolutely powerless to resist.

This is one film that should be in every collection of Criterion films, imho. The best Hitchcock film not shot by The Master of Suspense (Stanley Donen), the best Saul Bass title sequence not designed by Bass (Maurice Binder), and wow, what a cast-Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Walter Matthau, George Kennedy and James Coburn. The acting, the dialogue and the overall script are sharp, and the shooting locales are jaw dropping; one cannot do much better than the French Alps and Paris. When Grant and Hepburn engage in their repartee alongside the Seine, it brings me back to An American in Paris.

If you guys don’t own it, already, spend $20 at the Barnes & Noble dale. It will be money well spent!!

It's a terrific movie, although it doesn't quite overcome the huge age gap between Grant and Hepburn (he looks rather like a sugar daddy) and the scene where Grant takes a bath in his suit is rather gauche. Also some of the murders are a trifle graphic for what is in most part a frothy comedy, especially
[Show spoiler]the suffocation kill
. But yeah, the dialog and editing of the movie, and the energy of its lead performers defines snappy entertainment.

Charade works because it does resemble a Hitchcock film and it doesn't take itself too seriously. There's a sense of danger and suspense but it's not heavy handed. There's a middle ground whereas a film in less skillful hands would be an outright comedy or a super serious thriller.

Despite the age differences you've got Grant and Hepburn. Grant the model of suave and sophisticated male and Hepburn exuding ethereal femininity. Put them together and get out of the way. The film is a lot of fun.

PS - Who hasn't used the alias "Peter Joshua"? That's up there with another Grant alias "Conrad Burns" (To Catch a Thief). Connery's "Peter Franks" is the best.

Cary instantly made any & all age differences a non-issue.

I didn't mind the age difference so much in Charade. Hepburn's character was portrayed as a 30ish widow, and she looked and dressed the part, so that didn't bother me at all. Now, the age difference between Hepburn's character and Gary Cooper in Love in the Afternoon, that was borderline creepy (he looked old enough to be her grandfather).
