Just noticed Kino apparently licensed Kind Hearts and Coronets, Man in the White Suit and the Lavender Hill Mob from Studiocanal. While I'm happy Studiocanal is finally licensing stuff they had licensed to Lionsgate for their failed SC collection I can't help, but feel sad Criterion didn't get these. They obviously would have done a better job with them then Kino will do.

CC edition and Universal Home Entertainment 30th Anniversary edition look identical but 30th Anniversary edition is higher bitrate. Definetely going with Universal Home Entertainment on this one!

Grant turned down that film because of age difference. I think William Holden would've been a good choice.

Holden would have been perfect, but I read that he was passed over because of the affair that Holden and Hepburn had during Sabrina. Apparently, Hepburn was devastated when Holden chose to go back to his wife. I don't know if that was the real reason. Holden was known as a drinker by that time and wasn't always reliable. Or it could be that Holden was tied up making The Bridge on the River Kwai in Sri Lanka. I don't know for sure, but it's interesting to speculate what might have been.

All three of those individual films are blind buys for me. But I believe completely in Cuaron, P&P, and of course Ozu. Plus, I find blind buys exhilarating.
Good Morning is the last Ozu CC release I need; planning on getting it today. Y Tu I watched this year for the first time: EXCELLENT!

This sale I already bought Black Narcissus and Matter of Life and Death and watched both. I was in love with Black Narcissus! From the very beginning I was just enraptured with its beauty. But I actually found myself a bit underwhelmed with Matter of L&D towards the end. Please post your thoughts after you watch it. I'm definitely grabbing Red Shoes and Col Blimp today though if I can find them on the shelves.

I agree. I’m kinda sad that Criterion didn’t get all of the titles they lost from SC back. It appears they got a few (Ran, Tales of Hoffmann, & Nights of Cabiria, at least). But it would’ve been great to get previous Criterion releases like Kind Hearts and Coronets & Le Doulos back in print.

While disheartening I'd sacrifice any title as long as Ran is back in Criterion's hands. The UK release, while superior to the previous release, is very divisive as far as some of the color grading goes.

Also hoping Criterion aquired Port of Shadows and possibly Grand Illusions .

Kind Hearts is one of my favorite films as I'm a big fan of dark humor. And while I appreciate some of the titles Kino does release their track record is not that great in terms of extras and transfers.

I thought the Japanese edition of Ran was superior to the UK release

What's the confirm as far as RAN and CABIRIA are concerned? Is that just a rumor or a solid hypothesis? Cause I would try and move my copies now in that case.

How should one alphabetize Au hasard Balthazar? Under "A" or "H"?

Apparently the translation of the film is "Balthazar at Random"

From what I remember from the two college semesters I took of French, "au" typically means "to" as in "Je vais au cinema" or, "I'm going to the movies."

I'm sorry if this has been asked before but I'm not sorting through 9,000 pages. Anyone think it's likely that Criterion does some kind of Tarkovsky set? And not just in the Bergman (almost complete collection) sense but kind of like when they put the 4 Hitchcock films together.

I imagine they’ll do one after The Mirror is released. That is, if Criterion has the rights to it (which I believe they do).

I believe the only films they do not have the rights to are Nostalghia and The Sacrifice.

I don't speak French, so my first assumption would be that "Au" is an article and would be dropped. If you're saying it's not an article, then it would be filed under A, I would think.

Been posting images from and of them on social media. With Filmstruck no longer in the equation, it just seems logical.

Am I dreaming or did I read somewhere that The Human Condition was going to be released?

It's a contraction of "à" and the masculine article "le", correct?

Using this logic, a film such as "Au revoir les enfants" should be listed as an "R" film. Yes?

I'm assuming that French follows the same rules as English, so you would drop the article, yeah. I checked and I don't have any "Au" French movies, but that's how I handle "La Luna" or "El Mariachi" or "Die Hard".

I suppose we have no idea regarding the status of the Bunuel films from Studio Canal and some of the other Melville titles aside from Le Doulos, and the Third Man, and Last Year at Marienbad, and on and on, including the Godards that went OOP...

I have Studio Canal blu-rays of Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and That Obscure Object of Desire which are serviceable(nothing is as bad as Pathe's blu-ray of Le Samourai), but I don't think a better master of either film currently exists at the moment. Worst comes to worst, would Criterion do a Le Samourai with either title or just wait for a 4K master? Last Year at Marienbad recently had a 4K restoration. I'm not sure about Le Cercle Rouge and Army of Shadows and whether or not in the case of the latter the transfer Criterion previously released is the best currently in existence. Criterion's old Leon Morin, Priest release is already 4K-sourced though I believe.
