I would recommend you start with Takashi Miike's films. Start with Happiness of the Katakuris, then Visitor Q, then Ichi the Killer, then As The Gods Will and top off your marathon with Audition...

2008's Ichi was a bit of a spin-off too.

Speaking of Japanese films not on Blu. Why no Hideo Gosha love from Criterion. Would love to see Goyokin, The Wolves, Sword of the Beast, Hitokiri, Hunter in the dark or some of his other films on Bluray.

Also please criterion give us a restored Bluray of Samurai Rebellion.
Someone needs to put you in charge of Criterion quick.

Goyokin is a true masterpiece and would love to see that on Blu-ray. The Wolves, Sword of the Beast, Hitokiri are also great. However, Hunter in the Dark is something out of this world for me. One of my favorite films of all time. Tatsuyda Nakadai and Sonny Chiba in the same film? Can't beat that.

I've been bugging Criterion for YEARS to release more Gosha, but I get nothing. If enough people contacted them to show interest, I think it would be more likely. I would love to get interviews from both Nakadai and Chiba on the film.

I'd put it in my top five Zatoichi films, but as previously stated, it has a very 80's feel. The soundtrack is primarily the reason for that. Should have used a more classic soundtrack, but with that being said this is a pretty good flick. While the recent edition leaves a lot to be desired, it is leagues better than the previous DVD release.

Yeah, not sure what the deal is here. Criterion was the place to go for Japanese cinema on physical media at one point, but not sure what the hell happened. It's really frustrating as they have a TON of great films, but just let them stream out.

Dersu Uzala was rumored to come on Blu-ray, but that was awhile ago. Waiting for Drunken Angel, the Bad Sleep Well, and others. Hope they get their act together as their Japanese output has really gotten low.

I'd prefer Cash Calls Hell (1966). It's his most underrated film and IMO the best after Hitokiri (1969).

All this talk of Japanese movies; come on Criterion bring Super Sentai Blu's to the Western World.

Yes I know Shout are releasing the individual series on DVD but they don't have the movie rights.

Heads up, there are 5% coupons galore at Amazon on numerous Criterion titles. There was one on Forty Guns, I canceled my pre-order and then re-ordered to apply the 5% coupon.

I tend to not block unless the person is overly negative and it seems like a shtick. Lately, I've been blocking avys because some folks have eye sores (Ray Jackson's avy was spared).

All his films from the 60's and 70's were pretty amazing. His output after the 80's was hit or miss, but truly love Onimasa and The Geisha. Wish he got more love here.

Hitokiri is one of the best Japanese films period and Katsu's best role. Surprised this hasn't gotten a release yet.

Turned off the avatars and signatures years ago b/c virtually none of them are helpful. When the signatures got longer than most of the messages it was time to eliminate the distraction.

The handful of people in my ignore pile tend to be the one note posters -- 200 messages and I can predict their post before I read it. I cleared the ignore folder recently and 2 of them ended up back in there within a few weeks b.c I remembered why they were there in the first place.

That would probably be the final straw for me. I'd have to get a 4K HDTV if Seven Samurai were to be released on UHD.

Well I was specifically referring to the recent 4K transfer that was made in Japan. Would love to get a Criterion copy of it. But Criterion in UHD is a love hate relationship.

I'd rather have Yojimbo or Rashomon in 4K fiirst, but it's kind of crazy Criterions 7S is not from a 4k transfer after allllll this time imho.

Either way, the Seven Samurai Blu-ray from Criterion looks amazing. It's crazy how good a movie from 1954 can look.
