The large 27 disc is what I was looking for, that's what I had seen in both local stores last week. I didn't think it was going anywhere so I waited. I dropped the ball big time there. This is def the collection I wanted. I didn't even know about the other collection...

This weekend's Criterion sale, which ends on Sunday, December 16, is online only, so it wouldn't have helped if you found it in a store.

The 9 disc is just the Blurays in a slightly more compact box though almost identical art work.

The BD+DVD 27 disc box I can't even find listed on Criterion.com. It doesn't come up in search nor when you filter OOP titles. Most dual release items are discontinued or allowed to sell out when the BD only sets are released though. They even re-used teh Spine Number it appears. The only listing I can find anywhere are with 3rd Party and priced as an OOP item or on Used Disc

Ebay prices aren't outrageous even for Brand New for the actual sold items esp with the current 15% Ebay code.

I tried to order Forty Guns online but it was out of stock. It was, however, in stock at my local store. I was able to pay for it online at the sale price and do local pickup. I’ll be picking it up tomorrow. If I had just walked into the store and picked it up there, I would not have gotten the sale price. B&N’s sale policies continue to confound me.

I set my DVR to record this since I haven't seen it yet and want to know if it would be a possible future buy during one of the upcoming sales.

Unfortunately it expired overnight -- I thought it went through tonight Midnight, but I got my weekend night mixed up.
I had been working on a cart on and off most of the Saturday evening then left it and decided to sleep on it. By the time I decided
to go back to the tweaking in the middle of the afternoon, I realized I had misread which Midnight the code was keyed on.

I wouldn't surprise me to see at least one more code over the next couple week with Xmas, end of quarter, and end of Calendar year to
push the numbers.

I would be eternally grateful to anyone who can find large, high quality images of the following WITHOUT the blue sticker.

It's a really good book, but it'll likely take you more than 7 hours. It took me 14 months to get through it, but it was totally worth it (I woudn't have kept it up for that long if it wasn't captivating)!

Three months for me, and it is an absolute must if you're into literature. Amazing characters and stunning depictions of battles that are still resonating with me.

Maria Falconetti's expression is worth a thousand words.
We are so quick to lavish praise on films, now; this movie, or that movie finds favor with a critic, and before the ink is dry on their review, it's too oft labeled "a masterpiece". With so much rubbish coming out of Hollywood, the land of recycled ideas, anything resembling originality is deemed must see, its director hailed as a visionary. This noxious hyperbole is the unfortunate reality of a movie industry that, taken as a whole, has lost its soul. Cinephiles are confronted by an inextricable sense of melancholy visiting the theater now, as creativity has largely fallen by the wayside in favor of profit. Movies are no longer about artistic endeavor so much as box office receipts.

The Passion of Joan of Arc, Carl Th. Dreyer's recounting of the farcical trial and execution of "The Maid of Orléans", is a masterpiece in every sense of the word. The film, and Maria Falconetti's legendary performance as the French heroine, reminds us of how powerful the visual medium of film can truly be. Without uttering a single word, Falconetti conveys Joan of Arc's struggle with gut wrenching authenticity. Captured not long after the Siege of Orléans, and confronted by politically-motivated French theologians, the final act of Joan's life is eerily reminiscent of the last days of Christ. And Dreyer's unflinching camera captures the interrogation up close. His lighting choices, and the absence of any kind of makeup, render Joan's tormentors as grotesque caricatures.

Tonight marks my second viewing of the film, as Turner Classic Movies showed it yesterday morning. I already own the fine Eureka import, but will be purchasing the Criterion blu-ray when they hold their next Flash Sale in February. And, I strongly urge my fellow members to do the same.

That reminds me of this book called MAD Clobbers the Classics, a set of MAD mag spoofs on well-known works of literature. The second last page said "War & Peace Abridged: Part 1". When you turned it over, you got:

Eh what? What's with the "now"? Any age in movie history would have its share of originals, derivatives, clunkers and masterpieces. The movies that are remembered beyond their time are the masterpieces, there was no golden age in which they were generated by the bushel. Even "now" you have movies about artistic endeavor. Check out the new stuff that is shown in Indie and world cinema festivals. Makers like Nuri Ceylan, Christian Mungiu, Apichatpong Weerasethakul are putting out bonafide masterpieces of their times. No one is restricted to watching what their mainstream film industry puts out. And now films are not even dependent on theatrical screenings. Netflix is willing to put its money in Roma by Alfonso Cuaron, Buster Scruggs by the Coens - movies which are definitely not about rehashing popular trends.
