RE: MGM

I wouldn't be surprised to see re-releases of Blue Velvet, The Great Escape, Last Tango in Paris, Leaving Las Vegas, Spellbound, and This Is Spinal Tap.

I wish Criterion would release some of Woody Allen's catalogue, namely the new 4K remaster of Annie Hall.

What I'm hoping for next year:

Roman Holiday
The Pianist
Angels With Dirty Faces
Crash
Arsenic and Old Lace
Stella Dallas
Libeled Lady
The Lady Eve
Hamlet (1948)
The Pride of the Yankees
Lolita
Paper Moon
The Shop Around the Corner
A Place in the Sun
Hell's Angels
Wuthering Heights (1939)
The Bad and the Beautiful
Gaslight (1944)
The Elephant Man
The Lost Weekend
Ball of Fire
Jezebel
La Vie en Rose
Pandora's Box
Adam's Rib
Diary of a Lost Girl
The Unbearable Lightness of Being
The Thin Man series
Top Hat (actually, just give me all the Astaire & Rogers films)
Now, Voyager
Captain Blood
Fail Safe
Great Expectations (1946)
Bringing Up Baby
The Last Picture Show (as an individual release)
National Velvet (1944)
Klute

And since others are mentioning it, though it already has a pretty good release:

Lost in Translation

One of my all-time favorite films, so if Criterion wants to give it their treatment, I'd jump all over it.

As has been touched on already in this thread, there's quite a bit of unreleased Kirk on Blu-ray that would make for ideal Criterion candidates:

The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (the Film Treasure release doesn't count)
Detective Story
The Big Sky
The Bad and the Beautiful
Lonely Are the Brave (this one does have a region-free German release but an official Stateside release would be most welcome).

In addition, I'll echo a lot of some other excellent picks that have been tossed out there:

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde ('31)
The Black Cat ('34)
Bringing Up Baby
Arsenic and Old Lace
A Place in the Sun
The Naked Spur
Borsalino
Sleuth
Amadeus
Barfly

...and several Kurosawa's. Criterion already announced one of my most wanted (A Face in the Crowd), so let's keep the gravy train rolling!

Oh man, Diary of a Lost Girl and especially Pandora's Box would be so dreamy! Louise was something else.

I'd love to get Ran back. Seems violating almost to see someone else get Kurosawa. Especially since CC let that one go or whatever. Not sure how it really happened but it did...

You know what? I'd love CC to give us the Kurosawa Post WW2 set on BD. Really loved those films and enjoyed seeing how Kurosawa grew and you see what made him into the master he became after those films.

Like every year, Paris is Burning is on my wishlist, even though I know in my heart of hearts that it won't happen because Lionsgate holds the rights to it

Some great ideas and wish lists for 2019.

My own are quite humble, especially given the size of my unwatched pile. I’ll be happy with more Hitchcock (the Spellbound upgrade, and the two outstanding American-period titles), and more from the Japanese and Italian masters.

Yeah, with the expansion of places like Netflix showing stuff like Roma, etc. My un-watched pile has grown dramatically. Just wait until I get the Bergman set ... good lord, I may never leave the house again!

But yeah, more Hitch, those Louise Brooks films, a few more recent ones. But believe me, I understand completely.

I obviously don't need any Bergman. I am pretty set on Kubrick. I have every film that both Nolan and Fincher and Aronofsky (with the exception of Pi) have ever made. My Christian Mungiu collection is steadily growing.

I guess what I would really like to see is more Iranian films, especially Kiorastami and Farhadi.

I empathize with you. My DVR is down to about 15% space free, and that's after deleting a handful of movies that TCM is re-playing in the next two weeks, and scheduling to record them again. I am watching a lot, yes, but I'm recording nearly as much as I watch. It's a viscous cycle. There are a handful of movies on there that aren't out on blu-ray domestically, so I store them (The Pianist, Libeled Lady, selections from Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Roman Holiday, Arsenic and Old Lace, Bringing Up Baby, etc. And Cary Grant is slowly taking over my DVR). My blu-ray collection is also starting to take off again.

Additionally, I've started really getting into horror films. I experienced my first production from Hammer Films yesterday morning, Horror of Dracula, which WAC just released, so I'm sure that I'll be adding more of their films, as well as several of the Universal horror films.

God help me.

Yeah, my DVR isn't doing too well either. But I see so few films in the theater anymore that I use it and Blu-rays to see new films, basically. I mean, heck, between Uber, a Coke, and a ticket just blind buying the Blu is cheaper anyway. So, I usually get a good mix of older films and newer ones, often just a few months old and blind buys.

I don't leave my house a lot.

And I'd rather sit on my sofa or in front of my iMac than in a theater usually, anyhow. I really only go for "event" movies like Bladerunner 2049 or Wonder Woman or something like that. I just don't see the point in bothering with the whole thing for a movie that I might really love, like The Devil Wears Prada -- which I've now seen like 1,000 times --but would rather watch in my family room. Beer's cheaper, that's for sure.

Now, it would be different if I lived in NYC or LA and could see lots of classics on beautiful big screens. But that's not the case in the Detroit area, usually. Though I have seen Gone With the Wind 4 times in the theater. Mmm. That's an experience!

Great list! In particular, are all of the above definite possibilities for Criterion? I’m unsure how various folks are able to learn what Criterion has rights to/is pursuing rights to, so if one of those gurus could chime in I’d be grateful.

I *do* know that Criterion released Hamlet on DVD, but is there any reason to doubt an upgrade from Criterion won’t be in the cards? If there is, then today’s iTunes price of $9.99 CAD may be too tempting to pass up.

Also, how a highly regarded Best Picture winner like The Lost Weekend could still be MIA on blu-ray is just mystifying...

I've mentioned this in the forum before, but 2019 does mark the 30th anniversary for Do The Right Thing. So it'll be the perfect year for Criterion to release an upgrade.

I would love to see Criterion (or anyone) pick up the original Scarface. The DVD is a little rough, and the sound is so muffled, I need to cut the subtitles on to understand the dialogue. It might end up with Kino. It’s long overdue.

I asked on the Kino thread a month or two ago about the possibility of a release of the original SCARFACE, and Kino Lorber Insider responded saying they had attempted to acquire it but it was unavailable. Looks like Criterion could potentially have it, unless Universal is planning to release it themselves (I suppose Shout Select could also be a possibility, though I rather doubt it).

Yes, that would be nice. I have many titles I would like to see be upgraded to Blu (or better yet, 4K UHD), but I don't wanna make a list that included titles that are not "Criterion-Possible".
