I’m sure it’s be talked about before, but on what month should we expect no. 1000 to be released? and what are the chances that no. 1000 might be their first 4K?

We get usually between 5 or 6 a month and we’re at 968. 6 months seems like it would be the earliest possible, and I’m thinking it’s more than likely going to be 7. So my guess is July of 2019 we will have spine 1000 announced. Released? Usually around a 3 month delay so October is my guess.

I’m thinking less than 1%.

The last time I tried to watch some transfer of it ( I think it was On Demand? ) it looked absolutely terrible. It was absurdly overdarkened to the point of near unwatchability. If the existing blu looks like that it should be considered trash.

I remember anticipating this and then walking out of the theater going "what the hell did I just see?". One of the biggest movie-going disappointments. Tried to give it another chance on DVD but it still didn't click. I know Aronofsky had an uphill battle with the studio while making this and probably didn't turn in his preferred cut so if there's ever a DC I'll pick it up.

In all honesty, if it was one of your biggest movie-going disappointments, I don't think a hypothetical DC would improve the situation much if at all. It might reshuffle the ordering of scenes but probably wouldn't add significant content.

I'm always hoping every month for more Scorsese (After Hours, Bringing Out the Dead); more Pasolini ( Teorema, Accatone, Mamma Roma upgrade); Bertolucci (Before the Revolution, The Spider's Stratagem, The Sheltering Sky); Kurosawa's "Dersu Uzala"; the mythic Ken Russell's "The Devils".....

Probably won't get any of these.... But one can dream...

If THAT version of mother had studio-mandated cuts, I dread to think what his preferred version was. You've got
[Show spoiler]a baby pissing into the air in fear and then being gorily devoured!
I would definitely guess that was his director's cut and that any compromises were a result of budget or performances going wrong or something like that.

The existing Blu-ray is certainly watchable, and isn’t nearly as bad as godawful Universal discs like Weird Science, but it does have a lot of artificial sharpening and edge halos, along with noice reduction. I think it has good colors and shadow definition though. It just needs (and certainly deserves) a better transfer.

A couple brief scenes of Toad and Debbie outside have always been difficult to comprehend though, even on VHS. I chalk that up to the low budget of the film and how those scenes were shot. They tried to do a day-for-night kinda thing (I think they filmed in late afternoon or early morning), and it doesn’t quite work. Yet they do kinda feel like how it actually feels to walk outside at night with no light, and can’t see much.

If we ever get Darren Aronofsky it has to be Pi or Requiem for a Dream.

I'd love some kind of pre-code related release this month. That'd be a wishlist item for me.

My only reservation when I see lists like this is that would be a lot of wads Criterion would be blowing all at once.
