It's a shame too because after years of hearing bad things about it I was very pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the movie itself.

This. Plus I really hate the brutal way trailers are cut these days - obnoxiously overloud, overbearing audio, jump scares and the seemingly mandatory fade to black and back between every scene. Ugh

I quite like it, although haven't seen it in years so really need to revisit it.

Hitchcock is my favourite director, and I find Frenzy to be the more satisfactory denouement to his brilliant career.

It's ironic (to me) that I was just reading the discussion on Roma. I just watched this last night on Netflix. I had no idea it was exclusive to that platform, but read about it and was interested, just 24 hours ago. Saw no disc release on it, so wondered if it would ever come out on disc, but I was wrong in my assumptions. Anyways, My wife has a friend with Netflix...., blah, blah...... so I was able to watch it. I watched it last night in 4K Dolby Vision, doesn't get better than that, except for in the theater, no? IMO, this is a film that needs to be seen on the big screen. It's visuals are stunning, but cannot be fully enjoyed on my 65" screen. That much I figured out, so frankly, was not that impressed. I believe that the film would benefit more from color in many, many scenes I saw, but that, of course, IMO.. I saw the film as a 'self-portrait' of a time in Cuaron's life and that came across on my set. No need for a big screen on that point, but I felt that he was going for that 'artsy' feel and at times, it did not click on the small screen. Anyways, as for the subject of streaming and exclusivity, it gets a 'NO' vote from me. If it is 10% available in the theater, it is frankly, a tv movie and does not qualify, but that's my opinion.....

Roma in color would not work in my opinion. Certain scenes like the ocean one at the end, or the hospital one, or the fire benefit hugely from being in black and white.

Yeah. I've seen it twice, and I think color would have been a disaster. And it wouldn't have fit Cuarón's vision at all, as I see it.

Yes, there are many that work very well in B/W. IMO, the scene where they are walking through the field near the end and you can see the snow capped mountains and hillsides would really benefit from the beauty of the area they are in and give a real scope of the 'place' where the film takes place. The bustling of Mexico City is fine in B/W, as it takes it down a notch for the 'art' effect, but when they leave that area, the beauty is lost and not seen. IMO that is where it is lost. If it is a 'personal' film, the beauty of where he came from is never seen, just that one year story of his maid is brought through. I think he was going for more than just the story and overdid it. Just my opinion, but I saw that opportunity lost at times. Thought provoking and that was all that mattered.

The 2 large theaters in my neighborhood have reserved seating and I love it. I walk in at screen time and sit down, just as the trailers start. I cannot stand those commercials, they should be outlawed.

Get rid of the commercials (not trailers) before movies, and the damned pharmaceutical drug commercials on tv, and my life would be infinitely more enjoyable.

"Ask your doctor about ____".

Really? If something is not working, leaking, making funny sounds, causing flatulence, keeping me awake at night, spontaneously growing a third arm out of my forehead, or making me feel generally icky, I'll go to my doctor, describe the issue, and let them prescribe whatever drug is indicated, if any. They went to medical school, not the idiot producing/pushing the latest ridiculously overpriced fad drug onto the market.

The fact that those sorts of medications are advertised on TV to consumers in the US is bizarre.

Ads before films allows cinemas to exist, so I'm not going to rush to complain about them.

We get a lot of American TV here in Canada and what’s even more bizarre is that if those commercials say what the medication is supposed to treat, they are also legally obligated to name all of the side effects, so half of the commercial is a voiceover reading off a list of a bunch of things that can go wrong if you take it.

Yeah, that's always struck me as odd. I especially like it when, two or three times, the voice over says, "this might cause ___, which can lead to death."

Yay, I've got to run to my doctor, and get ask him all about it!

/looks for the old Saturday Night Live "Happy Fun ball" spoof.

Wait, here it is. This is from the early 90s, iirc, but it couldn't be more spot on for today.

But I don't know if he hates the people. Then again, I don't know that he doesn't either

I do question one thing he says in that video. Never in a trillion years will we experience movies on our phones?

I can't imagine what kind of VR whizbangery phones will be capable of in five or ten years let alone a trillion.
If he's a cranky bastard, count me in as a 2nd one. Sometimes geniuses can be the biggest a$$holes on the planet, but what matters is not the man but the art! I'm sure when he did that commercial 11 years ago, he had no idea just how fast 4k would hit our smartphone screens, and I would bet he prob. watches movie clips on his own smartphone too. But in 1 trillion years I doubt this planet will still be here, much less the solar system (actually didn't scientists say we have only another 4 billion years left before the sun explodes into a supernova?). I guess we best get working on that in-flight entertainment system to Alpha Centauri!

I think there are only a few countries in the world that even allow advertising of prescription drugs in the first place.

Even as a child, commercials use to irritate me and whenever I complained my parents would always say "they pay the bills". That was poppycock. Television today is just an outlet for the advertising industry - actual content/programming is just a footnote. Going to the movies these days is no longer a refuge from the onslaught of commercials, which is part of the reason why I stopped going. How long will it be before they actually break for commercials during theatrical screenings?

The movie theater scene with the smoke in the crowd is pretty majestic in B&W as well.
