Thanks CG...I wound up watching with the Israel score...

I enjoyed it for the most part...it reminded me a little of Murnau (like Sunrise/City Girl), but with a twist on the plot elements.

"Underworld" is next up in the queue...and the set is on order for delivery to the store.

I think I enjoyed the doc on von Sternberg almost as much as the film.

For restoration/remastering fans, 20th Century Fox literally went all out for this release and even did a whole special feature on how in 2005 (for the film's 40th anniversary) they couldn't do a restoration from the original damaged negative but in 2010 (for the 45th anniversary), they now have the technology that can work from the original damaged negative and how they discovered so much detail in the film never seen before. Since they have this new technology, it makes me wonder how older classics they have in their catalog will look in the near future on Blu-ray. Anyway, I won't discuss any further...but since we love Criterion for its restoration work, I just had to plug what Fox has been able to come up in terms of digital restoration for this new release.
I have been considering this release...especially after reading the review about it on this site.

Target has the digibook for $19.99 and it comes with an exclusive... "Limited edition includes 24-page book with rare photos and more."

The main thing I wanted from this sale was the 3 Silent Classics by Josef Von Sternberg (and Ozu’s “Story of Floating Weeds/Floating Weeds”) but oh well, hopefully they fix it in few days.

I used the B&N AAA link for 10% off and ended up getting:

Eclipse Series 22 – Presenting Sacha Guitry
Eclipse Series 24 – The Actuality Dramas of Allan King
Crumb
La Ronde
Le Plaisir
Louie Bluie
Thin Red Line
Early Summer
Night Train to Munich

Aside from the Von Sternberg, the other ones I probably may get near the end is “Modern Times” (if the sale lasts through Nov. 22nd, will purchase this on release date since I don't want any pre-orders holding up my B&N order) and I’m still debating on Eclipse Series 1: Early Bergman which I still haven’t bought yet. Mainly because I still have a lot of Bergman that I still have yet to watch...so "Sawdust and Tinsel" and "The Magician" and "Early Bergman" will have to wait...

I'm trying to stick to a strict budget as I still have to plan for Christmas shopping. Hehe....
I'm toying with getting The Magician, but will wait for later into the sale to decide. If I wasn't getting 3 BDs on the 16th, it wouldn't be such a tough decision (two CCs plus a Kino...I've never seen Sherlock Jr. ).

Besides the BDs...the only other "set" I'm considering is the 3 Silents...if I like "Underworld" as much as The Docks of New York, then I might pull the trigger on it.

just watched House for the first time...I really enjoyed it. It definitely wasn't what I was expecting, but it was a lot of fun.

The piano tune in this sounded VERY familiar. Did Poltergeist pay homage to this film with part of it's score? They sound SO similar...

EDIT:

In all seriousness, on the topic of CG's boy "Wesley"

Is that Fantastic Mr. Fox movie all CG (no offense CG) or Animation, Claymation, or live action (and the cover is just misleading) ???

I haven't seen so much as a preview for it, so I really have no idea..... I guess I could google what the basic premise of it is..... but what is the target demographic? (without the witty sarcasm please )
it's a stop-motion animated film. which i think means "claymation" since in the special features they show the characters and if i remember correctly they are made out of clay. and the film is superb great, witty smart fun!

Not quite claymation (it's a trademarked name anyway) but definitely stop motion. It's sculpted models in a similar vein as "Nightmare Before Christmas".

I think you will prob like Underworld the most. Just my feeling. I just like Docks out of the 3 for some reason.

I can't believe you were brave enough to go back to this post the respond to it. It must of been 5-6 pages back.

Yeah, but then you will have 2 covers of the generic font and not the cool cardboard fold-out.

He is just playing. He didn't buy all of that today. I believe he showed us his collection before.

But if someone ever did buy all of that in one day, then I would WELCOME a list post and total.

So, I drove to the B&N tonight that has a good selection of Criterions, and they did have pretty much every Criterion release except for the ones that are OOP.

I had planned to pick up Mystery Train on Blu-ray, but I also found another Jarmusch film I wasn't familiar with called Night on Earth (but only on DVD). After slipping away to the movie guides section of the store to read some reviews (does anyone else do this?), I ended up getting both. I also snagged a copy of the "Art House Essentials" version of Jules and Jim for $10 since I've been meaning to watch that. Now I just need enough time to watch all these films.
