Michel Legrand, one of the greatest film music composers of all time, passed away last Saturday at the age of 86. I just read this tonight on a news site and am deeply saddened. I don't recall it being mentioned yet by anyone.

Legrand is well-represented in the Criterion Collection in numerous releases, particularly The Essential Jaques Demy set. The first time I heard his hauntingly beautiful score to The Umberellas of Cherbourg and the song "I Will Wait for You", I was transfixed, listening to something so sublime it made my soul ache that anything so perfect cannot last forever.

Rest in peace, and thanks for so much wonderful music.

And I have to add that Math was one of my least favorite subjects at university... which is why I chose Film Studies... because... I don't need to worry about math when I watch a great movie!

I don't know if it was mentioned here yet but not only is Criterion putting up a movie every week until The Criterion Channel launches but they are also making available all the extras for that movie as well.

The movie this week is Mikey and Nicky and as far as I can tell, the only special feature missing is the booklet that ships with the Blu-ray.

I watched Mikey and Nicky by way of the Criterion Channel tonight. I know someone had mentioned that it is currently web only, but this isn't exactly true, your Criterion Channel account is linked through an Apple/Android app called VHX, which allows for both mobile playback and Chromecast support

I streamed the film to my TV through the Chromecast and had no issues whatsoever. No buffering or anything like that.

As far as quality is concerned... I was relatively impressed. I'm a fan of film grain but noticed quite a bit more than I would expect (presumably additional noise due to the compression required for streaming). Overall however, it looked pretty good, however the audio wasn't quite as crisp as I would have liked. I'm not sure whether this was a limitation of the stream, or if it's inherent in the source material. Unfortunately, I don't have the newly released Blu-Ray so a comparison is impossible.

It certainly won't replace the discs of films that I care about, but you can't buy everything, and I think this is going to be a great way to discover some new films I may not jump out and buy on day 1.

Best of all... For the time being, it's free. Couldn't really ask for more than that.

Is it the same VHX that's also available on Roku?

https://channelstore.roku.com/details/48061/vhx

How do you link your Criterion account to that?

Is this an official partnership between Criterion and VHX, or some sort of third-party solution?

If it's the latter, I'm kinda wary about giving an unaffiliated third-party my Criterion credentials. (I'm probably being overly cautious, but so be it.)

Looks like the same one to me!

As far far as linking your account....

I literally had to do nothing. The Criterion Channel must do everything in the back end. As soon as I created an account at VHX.tv and signed in, my Criterion account was already there... I guess it must be tied to your username/email address.

Criterion

Newsletter clue likely hitting inboxes later today. January to April are set. Approximating about 5 releases per month that leaves us with 40 unannounced titles for 2019.

40 unannounced titles
-12 number of films hinted at (and unannounced in New Year's Card (Presumably due in 2019).
28 titles remaining

What are you hoping for in today's clue?
