Possibly ... or some other TV guest appearances. Or maybe even his wine commercials.

A don't assume a UHD wouldn't yield much better picture than what we have now, since the transfer wasn't from the negatives (which were destroyed). So I'm fine with the WB disc, no need for a Criterion to just port over the same restoration with a couple of new extras (and considering everyone is long dead and gone, I wouldn't expect anything much different than what's already known and been seen already).

In relation to UHD and the fact the Criterion has not opted to produce them so far, I can't help but wonder what the price structure would be if and when they do.

Criterion previously tried changing their packaging so that all releases came with a DVD and Blu-Ray, thus satisfying both types of customers. Unfortunately, DVD only customers, which is a surprisingly large percentage, were upset because they had to pay an increased price for a format they can't use. So Criterion ended the dual format releases.

Currently, DVDs retail for $29.96, while Blu-Rays retail for $39.96. With the 50% off sales the difference is $14.98 vs $19.98. But what are the prices going to be if they release a UHD version. Assuming they keep DVDs and Blu-Rays at the current pricing, are the UHDs going to $49.96, or $24.98 during the 50% off sales? If so, are people going to pay the higher price?

I know many of you will pay the higher price without batting an eyelash. But when there is a large percentage of people who still buy the DVDs, and a large group of people who don't have a UHD player or 4K HDTV, and the price for the UHD will be higher, one has to wonder how successful such a launch would be.

I'm sure these are the sort of questions Criterion considers, along with the ramifications of streaming. In relation to streaming, they are going forward full steam. Perhaps they see a better future with streaming than they do UHD?

Just some thoughts I had on this Friday afternoon as we get ready for another snow storm in Central New York.

I don't think I was listing anything unreasonable. Basically following what Criterion has done with other Welles releases and similar instances of films with decent editions. But I don't think many know how slight Warner's edition is outside the commentaries. It was amazing for 2001, but it pales to even Warner's special editions of Ben-Hur, Gone with the Wind, or even The Adventures of Robin Hood.

Even with the negative gone, 4K could look great. I saw a 35mm print and was honestly surprised by how sharp and nice it looked. And that was before they found the nitrate fine-grain positive used for the 2011 restoration.

Oh my yes. The film doesn't completely work, in my opinion, but Finney is godlike.

Plus, I'd love to see an HD presentation of the included NFB doc about Lowry narrated by Burton. Arguably more gripping than the feature.

He's really rad in this. Probably my favorite thing about the movie.

I absolutely adored him in Erin Brockovich and Murder on the Orient Express. Those are my favorite performances of his (I still need to see some important movies he starred in, though).

Citizen Kane could absolutely be improved. The current release is cropped a little tightly.

Finney was an awesome actor. Check him out in "Saturday Night and Sunday Morning" if you haven't seen it. One of the definitive "angry young man" performances.

Shoot the Moon would make a great Criterion release. Finney and Diane Keaton are both pretty sensational in it.

Warner DVD is currently OOP...

I would honestly rather they make good on their April Fool's Kindergarten Cop cover than spend any time or money licensing Citizen Kane from Warner just so they could crop it a little less tightly.

It's actually not, in the slightest. The US release shows the most picture of any region, and shows more than the DVD.

And since it's a new scan/restoration by WB from the best surviving elements, it's all you're going to get anyway.

Does anyone know when the next flash sale will likely be?

And does Amazon usually, or ever, price match during flash sales?
