Ray,

Last three Feb flash sales were on these dates:

2018 - 13th
2017 - 28th
2016 - 23rd

Don't believe Amazon price-matches over the 24 hours. Our esteemed colleague and sale expert hariseldon may know more.

Definitely. This seems like a natural fit for Criterion but the old DVD release was MGM so I have no idea who has the rights to it now.

Count me with the folks who don't want to see Criterion waste their time on Citizen Kane. The Warner release is as good as that movie will ever look, and there's nothing much to add in terms of extras.

We all know what #1000 should be:

Greed is at the top of my list of the Warner-owned silents, but I wonder if it'll end up with Warner Archive since that seems to be the case with The Crowd and The Wind.

(Still think it's a pity how WB hasn't done much with their silents considering The Big Parade and The Jazz Singer both look incredible on Blu-ray)

I would love The Crowd to be released by Criterion or Warner Archive.

There Will Be Blood is one of the greatest pictures ever made.

It’s the Citizen Kane of the modern era.

It should be released by Criterion.

I don’t care what studio owns it.

...I want it.

BFI has the UK rights. It's a great release if one is region free. It's also in the superb Woodfall set.

KL has an arrangement with BFI here in the US (three titles were announced yesterday). Could be worth asking KL Insider in that thread.

As reported by Cinephrenic on CriterionForum, Koreeda's After Life is listed as a Janus Films title.

https://bampfa.org/event/after-life-reprise

I continued to browse around at the events calendar and noticed that James Ivory's The Guru is listed as a 20th Century Fox/Criterion film.

If Paramount with all of its financial struggles can manage to get the work done on so many of their silents over the last few years, it’s totally ridiculous that Warner can’t get these films done, especially considering these are some of the films that form the absolute peak of the era.

Whoever does eventually do Greed, the original theatrical release better be the main focus of the edition, not the reconstruction. The film’s reputation is built on the version that made it to theaters. The reconstruction is a nice “what if?”, not something you actually want to watch over and over again. It annoys the heck out of me when TCM shows it instead of the real thing.

Interesting. I imported 4 of the new Kore-edas remasters from Japan and they are nice.

Hey, Ray?

I drank your milkshake. Loud sucking sound

One of my very favorite Daniel Day-Lewis performances, which is saying a lot. I practically idolize the man.

If I could go back in time, and do it all over again, I’d be a movie director, then sit outside his flat with a cardboard sign reading “will work for Daniel Day-Lewis.” Maybe I need to take a trip to Scotland, and try walking into a stone pillar. With my luck, though, I’d end up fighting with the Jacobite army alongside a bunch of crazed Highlanders.

Speaking of Daniel Day-Lewis, The Unbearable Lightness of Being is one of my most wanted upgrades. I’ve not yet seen it, because I’m waiting for a proper high definition release. The opportunity to see DDL and Juliette Binoche act together would feel reminiscent of waking up on Christmas morning as a kid. I don’t know how much longer I can wait it out, though.

Haven't seen "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" mentioned anywhere for ages. It's also been on my 'top-twenty' upgrade list for years. One of the opening scenes where DDL and Juliette Binoche (another of my favorite performers) first encounter each other in a small cafe/bar and establish an instant attachment and rapport through the use of only gesture, eye-contact, and nuance is utterly sublime and magical and is one of my favorite-ever scenes. I can't imagine any other two actors who could pull it off with such exquisite impeccability.

I agree, it’s an exceptional film. While I’ve never seen the Criterion DVD, I own the Warner special edition, and it’s quite nice. But I’ve pushed it back in anticipation of an equally strong BD from one or the other. Hopefully someone will get it out because this is a film that truly deserves it.
