4 different movies a day would complete the 15,000 in a little over 10 years.

I've said basically this same thing before, but her goes.

There are people who buy things (books, Blu-rays, comics, glassware, whatever) where the primary intent is to consume or use whatever those items are. Then you have people who are approaching purchases with primarily a collector's mentality. Using or consuming something is secondary to having it, usually to help to complete a collection.

Back when I was collecting comics, I was very familiar with that second drive. There were lots of Wednesdays where I walk down to comic shop, and walk out with numerous books I had no intention of reading, or where I didn't really care whether I ever got around to it. Often it was because I knew a book was coming to an end or rebooting, and since I had the first (whatever) number of issues, I might as well buy the last (whatever) number of issues, even if I had stopped reading the run a while ago.

That sort of thinking makes little to no sense to someone whose primary reason for getting (whatever) product is consumption or use. But it makes total sense to someone who addresses the same urge but to collect and complete.

There are people in this very thread who have every spine # Criterion has released. I am sure that there are titles in there which that collector had very little to no interest in ever watching. But that wasn't the point.

I distinguish between "collecting" and "hoarding". The person who is the focal point of this discussion is guilty of the latter.

Well, we all see things differently. Fair enough.

But most hoarders aren't so organized or neat.

I think it's COOL!

But unecessary not even anyones top 100 movies I could find movies that I think are bad LOL. So he has more bad movies than good in his collection ha ha. But I bet he also has all the good ones buried in there: somewhere

As a general rule I find most people's definition of hoarding tends to start somewhere at "twice as many as I have" -- pretty much lending credence and validity to every person who has sniffed and tut-tutted likely nearly every person in this forum and lumped us into the True Hoarder exploitation TV shows.

True Hoarding has absolutely nothing to do with number, but with all consuming life destroying compulsion -- very few if any of us here qualify, but then again almost nobody here is truly OCD either regardless of the non stop assertions of such.

Has anyone heard of this type of performance? I’ve heard of silent films having a live orchestra but never this. Thought I’d bring it up since the collection has a lot of samurai films, and I’m still going through the Zatoichi set.

"...is 'guilty'"?

Am I wrong in picking up maybe a bit of jealousy in some of these comments. If the guy has the brains, talent, and wherewithal to indulge in something he enjoys why would anyone have an issue?

I have about 700 movies right now and I'm pretty much at the end of what I want to buy. I can't imagine someone with 20K movies. How can you have the time to watch that many films?

Yes, you're wrong...I already hate myself for owning less than 1/7th of this guy's total collection.

How can you sit here and claim he enjoys movies when by his own admission he's only watched a couple hundred that he owns? An average joe who doesn't commit any serious capital to collecting sees more movies than that.

You are first assuming he was telling the exact truth which I'm pretty sure he;s not just by the way he talks about the movies. But even if he's never taken them out of the cellophane/shrink -- it's still irrelevant.

Why do anyone get to determine if, how, or how much he enjoys his movies. If he gets joy by watching them once or ten time or never, looking at them, rearranging them on the shelves, reading the covers/booklets, holding them, or just knowing he own them - his enjoyment is his decision, not someone else's. I'm quite certain he doesn't care what anyone thinks.

He can afford them, he's paying his bills and apparently taking care of his family, he seems to be a very good businessman, he seems to have a family and plenty of friends and is functional in society, and he's not hurting anyone with his hobby

Like my buddy who goes fishing multiple times for several weeks every year -- he doesn't eat fish, he doesn't even catch the fish, he rides around on his boat on the water with his pole and line in the water (no hook on the line, just a weight to keep the line down). He likes talking to other fishermen at the lodge or breakfast places, he likes sitting on the boat mostly by himself listening to music or sometimes just in quiet (no phone, no internet, no TV, just him sitting there feeling happy. Other fishermen think he's crazy and wasting his time/money -- is he wrong to spend his $5000 per year this way?

He's a great guy, he's nice to everyone, he's not stressed out and cursing people out every day, his employees adore the guy who he pays above average wages and goes way out of his way to make sure they're happy and involved with their work. Nobody I'm aware of has ever quit his business to work for a different company even if they had a chance a some more money, but he has talked people into taking other jobs b/c it had a better ceiling and long term possibilities with the understanding that if they hate it they're welcome to come back.

I love Kurosawa, but I've never seen Red Beard. I've held out so long for a Blu upgrade and I'm dying to watch it. I keep hearing it got a new scan sometime not that long ago. Should I buy the DVD to finally see the movie or wait? I just can't make up my mind. I'm also thinking if I waited for a beautiful Blu-ray I might like the movie even more since DVDs are... eww.

Unconfirmed rumor

@Gunther – Yes, “Roma” will be on Blu-Ray/DVD. Cuarón & Netflix met with the Criterion Collection about doing a deal to release it. From what’s been said a deal was made and Criterion will be releasing “Roma” sometime in 2019. “Roma” will be hitting physical media this year.

Oh man, if Criterion released Roma I might have a cardiac arrest.

That's only half kidding, too!

Too bad, because the Netflix release was in 4K Dolby Vision and this will be a blu only release? Frankly, a downgrade on the feature, unless CC shocks us all and releases it on 4K, which I doubt highly.

By the way, how come this thread is not in the sticky in studios and distributors section anymore??

Hmm...would have preferred Roma on 4K Blu-ray with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.
