What are some good horror movies I could get from this flash sale? I'm not familiar with the Criterion library so any tips would be greatly appreciated.

"Night of The Living Dead", "The Silence of The Lambs", and "Videodrome" are good starters.

It’s a DVD, but I always recommend Z.

Seconds and The Manchurian Candidate are also really good thrillers.

Fanny and Alexander is a personal favorite, Yi Yi, along with the Cassavetes box set.

Edit: my reading isn’t great, you specifically asked for horror, not just in general. Oops, my mistake. Sorry!

Night of the Living Dead, if you don't already have it.

Carnival of Souls is another classic worth owning. Eyes Without a Face is a really classy (but dark) French film I admired. The Uninvited is a classic, but I wasn't a fan. Cat People is one I always hear about but still haven't seen.

More modern films I've enjoyed are Silence of the Lambs, The Brood, Shallow Grave, The Devil's Backbone, and Cronos (the latter two can be bought together with Pan's Labyrinth in the Del Toro box set).

1997's Funny Games is slated for release in May. There are a few other Criterion films that are equally dark and violent--Fat Girl is pretty messed up, and Salo...oh man, we don't talk about that one.

"Seconds" is, to me, one of the most underrated in the collection; Wong Howe's cinematography, Hudson's performance, and the overall melancholy tone make it one of my favorite sci-fi films.

https://www.criterion.com/shop/browse?genre=horror

Of these I think Carnival of Souls, Repulsion, Rosemary's Baby, don't look now, House, Jigoku, Vampyr and Eraserhead are essential viewing if you like a bit (to a lot) of surrealism in your horror. House is especially bonkers...

If you like body horror you can't go wrong with the Cronenberg films.

The del Toro films and The Uninvited are good ghost stories.

The Lure is a weird musical horror that I thought had lots of great ideas but would not recommend as a blind buy.

And of course Night of the Living Dead, Eyes Without a Face and The Blob are cornerstone horror films.

Equinox is a fun little no budget film.

The rest I haven't seen recently enough to comment on.

But if a "handful" amounts to 4-5 titles, that's almost the price of the entire box (on sale).

The other suggestions, plus Rebecca if you want something gothic. Also Sisters and Dressed to Kill might be enjoyable if you're into horror.

Yeah, I know. It's totally worth getting. There's just other titles I'd rather have right now.

Ugh - couldn't resist and went back and got three more!
  • The Wages of Fear

I need a little help, guys. I got 7 in the flash sale but feel like it's almost a necessity to get 3 more lol. So, I've narrowed it down to these:

Sullivan's Travels
Asphalt Jungle
In a Lonely Place
Gilda
The Killing
Solaris
Sansho the Bailiff
Yojimbo
Dressed to Kill
Three Colors
Double Life of Veronique

Which 3 would you pick from these? I'll make my decision by the deadline but it would be cool to get some advice here. Thanks!

Sullivan's Travels
Three Colors
The Killing

2nd Team All Americans
Gilda
Yojimbo
Solaris or Dressed to Kill depending on if you like slow science fiction or DePalma thriller type (neither are a slam dunk style)

You’re aware Three Colors is a three film set, correct? That’s my first choice. One of my favorite things in my entire collection, Criterion or not. The Asphalt Jungle and Solaris would make for a real interesting haul.

Can’t go wrong with any of those. The Killing is fantastic.
