I’m gonna throw a vote in for Selena on the horizon, which has never had a Blu release and I noticed the DVD is now out of print. I couldn’t find the links, but I know it’s been mentioned on the Current a time or two.
I could kinda see this going to Shout Factory, though I’d argue its importance for several reasons: - biopic of a very important cultural figure - landmark of Chicano cinema with significant mainstream popularity - continues to be a favorite, 20+ years later - it launched the singing career of Jennifer Lopez (who, however you feel about her music, absolutely dazzles in the title role) ![]() |

The movie is in my top 50 favorites as well. An incredible work of art by Ms. Coppola. Here's hoping we see a Criterion release of this film in 2019. ![]() |

Last night being the weekend I pulled out a long-standing watch pile disc, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (UoC).
UoC is a musical taken to the extreme, in that every line of dialog in the film is actually sung out, and the film is the joint creation of writer-director Jacques Demy and composer Michael Legrand. The story is a tried-and-tested romance melodrama in which hunky Nino Castelnuovo and an early Catherine Deneuve (although just 1-2 years away from her career-making performances in Roman Polanski's Repulsion and Luis Bunuel's Belle de Jour) play young lovers who want desperately to get married. But Deneuve's mother feels it's too early for her 16-year old daughter and Nino is abruptly called up for draft service. Before they part, the lovers share a night of passion, which has major consequences. Pregnant with Nino's child Catherine waits a long while, but as time passes and letters from her lover become less frequent, she accepts the proposal of an ardent admirer who will accept the unborn child as their own. Shortly after, Nino returns to find his love gone and himself directionless. At the end there is a short coda in which the former lovers meet in their new lives and take stock. According to Demy, he wanted to make a movie that would make audiences cry. I don't know about public response but UoC on release was certainly a critical darling, winning the Palme D'Or at Cannes and being nominated for Best Foreign Film at the Oscars. UoC is a beautifully mounted film with memorable eye-popping visual design. Although the emotional drama was not gripping enough to hugely affect me, the all-singing aesthetic gives the film a unique charm, and raises it above the predictability of the bare story (more so if you grasp spoken French and can appreciate the rhyming, my own school level French is very rusty and I was dependent on the subs which convey the dialog, but not the rhythm). I saw the film on Studio Canal's standalone blu-ray, based off a 2K scan and restoration, which is from all accounts the source of the Criterion release as well. The film looks like it could have been shot yesterday - the colors pop and detail levels are solid. Audio options on the SC disc included LPCM 2.0 (based on the original mono) and a re-purposed 5.1 DTS-HDMA track that adds musical presence but is not aggressive in the use of surrounds - Sound and music are excellently served here. UoC is highly recommended for fans of musicals and a tasteful kind of romance melodrama. ![]() |

What have they done to My Criterion! I wanted to add in the titles I've bought since the original went off line... no luck! The sort doesn't appear to work, and you can only add titles from their individual pages. Then you go back and have to waste 30 seconds resetting the sort order, only to find the title you just added is not there. It's impossible
![]() Talk about breaking something that worked perfectly! |

Realized recently that One Sings, the Other Doesn’t puts us at spine #978, so #1000 is for sure gonna be this year, any ideas on what it could be? I guess Grand Budapest Hotel could be a safe bet since #300 was Life Aquatic and #700 was Fantastic Mr. Fox, but who knows. Any guesses?

![]() I adore this film. No matter how times I've seen it (a lot) the melodrama never gets tiring, the characters are beautifully though out both individually and in their relationships with one and other. The music is just gorgeous, but that's no surprise with Legrand having written it. And it's one of the most lovely films I can think of, with an absolutely lovely color scheme. It's not difficult, for me anyway, to understand how this charming film won the Palme D'Or back in 1964. |
