After seeing the Photoplay Productions/BFI version, I wouldn’t be overly concerned about the version Zoetrope, Cinematheque Francaise, and Criterion release. It might actually have more content than the Brownlow version but both will have the same absolutely terrible Act 3 - “Napoleon and Josephine: The Blandest Lovers of All Time.” Everything you ever hear about Napoleon comes from the stunning Act 1 and the Triptych from Act 4 (which, early widescreen aside, isn’t nearly as interesting as it seems to be; I certainly never need to see Josephine’s face again after the drudgery of Act 3.) Act 3 is the antithesis of anything innovative - all of Gance’s weakness as a dramatist and none of his visual strengths.

Turns out I'd seen Island of Lost Sous years ago and yet somehow much of seemed like I had just watched it... I wonder if it was included on a multi-dvd set of horror films I picked up, or I rented it long ago...

For those of us in Canada, it appears as though, the new norm on Amazon.ca is a $47 pre-order price.

Traditionally, it's been roughly $37 CAD, but after I locked in my pre-order for Detour at $37, everything seemed to increase by $10. I had hoped this was a temporary thing, but after waiting a month for May's titles to be available for pre-order, they've finally been posted, with a $47 tag.

Man, that's a tough price to swallow. I'll have to be more than just a bit pickier with my pre-orders at that price, if it is in fact 'the thing' going forward.

My June dream lineup:

Eyes Wide Shut
Two English Girls
White Dog
Lost Highway
Crash (Cronenberg)
Onibaba
This Is England
Hedwig & The Angry Inch
The Elusive Pimpernel

Obviously way more releases than we get in a month. This is more of a quick I want these titles, but these would make me very happy. We know we’re getting one though.

It's been almost two years since the release of Tampopo.

How about some more Juzo Itami releases?

Do the Right Thing? That would be a good choice, as Criterion did a DVD release. It'll be great to have the original colour timing, just like how the Turbine BD has it right and the Universal doesn't.

Paying full price is insane, IMO. I do regret NOT pulling the trigger when Ingmar Bergman collection was on pre-order for C$215!

Just picked up few in 2019:
0490 Wings of Desire, C$29 (lowest I've ever seen)
0536 Thin Red Line, C$29 (lowest I've ever seen)
0544 Still Walking, C$37 (was >C$40 for a long time)
0679 Zatoichi Collection, C$152 (lowest I've ever seen)
0795 Gilda, C$27 (lowest I've ever seen)
0942 Tree of Life, C$39 (was >C$40 for a long time)

The price eventually comes down with time for 'most' of the titles; some stubbornly stay high. I just wanted Still Walking & Tree of Life badly enough to pay high prices. Tree of Life was 100% worth it. Now that I've got most of my Criterion itch scratched, I can wait for others to come down to C$30 mark.

I think there is a strong chance that Criterion also has The 25th Hour (I think I remember Kino saying it was with another label.)

I believe Hedwig has been confirmed by John Cameron Mitchell as coming in June right?

Here's hoping for Polyester to be announced.

I had no problem paying $37 bucks for titles I wanted, but I planned to pick up Funny Games, House of Games, and Blue Velvet... But definitely not at $150 combined.

I did pick up the Bergman set at that price, which was amazing. I'd planned to hold out for a Criterion or B&N Sale (as I generally do for boxsets), but at that price the difference was so minimal, I had to do it.

I also picked up Zatoichi at $161 a couple of weeks ago, and Amazon (as they do) shipped it in a bubble mailer. It wasn't damaged, but I was angry enough that they didn't even try to protect a $150+ purchased that I complained, and they gave me a 20% refund. So it ended up costing me about $130... Not bad.

Oh, hell yes. My favorite Leigh and Denis. It's about time some of her older titles got the treatment.

With Police Story 1+2 right around the corner I don't expect any similar announcements so soon, but I would kill for another Jackie Chan and/or Sammo Hung release from that era sometime in the next year.

Incidentally, my flash purchases have all arrived:

This and Insode Man are the only Spike Lee movies I care for. I’d buy this in a heartbeat.
