They're going to be showing Lynch's 'The Elephant Man'... hope for a Blu release then?

I finally watched Paul Schrader’s Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985) this morning. What a profound experience that was. My senses are still overloaded by the magnitude of beauty, both sights and sounds, that exudes from the film. First time I can say I’d love to see what a UHD can do for it, just for the sake of curiosity. The BD is top tier. Incredible film.

I bought the German blu last week. I just want Lost Highway and Inland Empire! And Straight Story of course but I’m not sure how possible it is to get the rights.

There’s a classic movie from 1976 that I think would look cool with a remastered Blu-ray from Criterion, and that is Sidney Lumet’s satire about the television industry: NETWORK.🙂

No. The current disc is fine. Yes, the picture could always be improved on, but the existing disc, with its extras, is acceptable. Too many other movies that have no release at all.

The master itself is from an old telecine scan of the negative from the late 90s. While it could definitely use a new coat of paint, it’s not terrible as far as old masters go and I would prefer new-to-Blu films.

The US/Warner Blu uses the transfer made for the 2-disc DVD, which came out in 2006 - completely different transfer from the 2000 DVD.

So I’m finally seven episodes into Berlin Alexanderplatz. I sort of have to agree with some of the things the critics have said. The first episode, which runs 82 minutes is a real drag. And the second and third episodes are a little slow as well. But from the fourth episode on they have been very interesting and really good. I could’ve done without the sheep slaughter. Yes I am one of THOSE people! As entertaining as it is it doesn’t feel like a Fassbinder production at all.
I’ve been watching them slowly only one episode a night. The 59 minute running time makes it pretty easy to get one in even if I’m tired after work or right before going to sleep. Here’s to hoping the remaining episodes are just as good. |

I saw Ermanno Olmi’s touching and poignant I Fidanzati via Criterion’s DVD yesterday. It’s an unusual mix of neorealism and French new wave technique with a terrific ending.
Has this been restored recently? Deserves a blu release, although the DVD is quite solid. Another Criterion DVD that needs upgrading is Green For Danger. I rewatched it last night via the Criterion DVD and it’s just such a fun movie, but without sacrificing characterisation or drama. Alistair Sim definitely steals the show once he turns up but I quite enjoyed the movie even before his appearance. The Criterion DVD is oversharpened but otherwise a fine presentation. |
